Look Mum...No Hands!!!
A little bit about our company:
indelabilityarts is an inclusive theatre company based in Brisbane check out our website for more information http://indelabilityarts.wixsite.com/indelability-arts, creating work by and with artists who identify as having disabilities. Look Mum...No Hands!!! is our first work and its premiere season is at the Brisbane Powerhouse in September this year - and we are excited to be bringing this full production to Brisbane Audiences.
How did we get here?
In 2015, Rebecca Roberts and Catarina Hebbard set out to start a company that would provide ongoing employment opportunities for artists who identify as having a disability. As a company, we will be celebrating the 1st anniversary of our very first creative devleopment session on the 10th August 2016! In just 12 short months we have presented 2 development showings of our work the first of which took place at Brisbane Powerhouse in November 2015. Armed with some excellent feedback from our audiences we set out to take the work to the next level and went searching for a writer who could lead us in the right direction. We needed to find someone who 'fit' us, and we came across Emma Workman (an incredible writer whose perspective, work and experiences aligned so well with ours), she sat in on a rehearsal and gave us some feedback on how we might shift the work into a ‘story’ with a narrative… and here the legless bar was born…(title of the bar thanks to Madeleine Little). THEN, On the 22nd July 2016 we presented the 2nd development of Look Mum...No Hands!!! as part of La Boite HWY festival....AND NOW we are on the road to the premiere production of the work... but we need your help to make this the best show that it can be.
This is why we are running our $3000 in 3 weeks campaign.
There are many ways you can support us and there lots of different types of rewards; from shout-outs on social media, to experiences like a guest spot at open-mic night or a gold star seat (sitting at a cast members table at the bar & having the opportunity to interact with the cast during the show)... plus lots of other fun memorabilia.
About the show:
So this is the premise: The show is set in the legless bar on open-mic night – a night of trivia, mayhem, karaoke, comedy, poetry, stories and spotlight moments (the spotlight moments give us a glimpse into the people behind the characters at the legless bar).
Our actors take on the following characters: Maddie is the owner of the bar & MC for the night – She is smart, sexy and full of sass; underneath it all is a woman who wants to be treated with respect and equality. Karen is her twisted best friend who works the bar (and drinks the bar). She is the trivia hostess with the most-ess, and is vying to be crowned Karaoke champ for 2016 (she was runner up in 2015). She is a singer-songwriter with a wicked sense of humour and a wonderful ability to smile in the face of adversity. Dave is a regular at the bar and the karaoke champ from 2015 – he is cool and charismatic has all the answers and the best of advice, he’s a bit of a joker too and is best mates with Michel who is also a regular. Michel is on the eternal quest for love, he's handsome, funny and has the biggest heart you ever did see. Every week he comes into the bar with a date in the hope of finding true love, sometimes things look promising, but alsas he is still single… what a waste!
All of them are competing for the karaoke crown, and during the night the audience have the opportunity to participate in the show via a trivia quiz which links all of these moments together.
Strap in for a wild night of side-splitting antics, glorious music and heart-warming stories and just remember, when you enter the Legless Bar, nothing will ever be the same again (in the best possible way).
We would love your support in any way you can:

How The Funds Will Be Used
Through this campaign we aim to raise $3000 in 3 weeks.. yes we have high hopes in a short time - but with your help we can do it!!!
Our goal is to create a show that will be remembered for a long time (for all the good reasons). In order to do this we need to invest in the visual aspects of the show - set, costumes, lighting, sound... and very importantly, the marketing, so that we can get the word out there & SELL this show OUT!!!
We have received an incredible amount of in-kind support for which we are incredibly grateful!!! Brisbane Powerhouse, MND & Me Foundation, Nick Morrissey, Chancie Jessop, Leanne Beer, Laura Bamford, La Boite, QTC.
We have secured a couple of grants for specific elements - the Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge fund to implement accessible strategies such as Interpreting, audio description and captioning - all of our shows this year will be Auslan interpreted as well as captioned thanks to this funding.
Brisbane Powerhouse is providing us the space to perform in - however there are still many other costs involved.
What do we need?
- set & costume design + the cost to build and make these items (our set needs to be tourable - sturdy and compact)
- lighting design and creation + equipment hire
- sound design and equipment hire
- technicians to set up and run the show
- funding to market the show
So here's the breakdown:
$1500 of this campaign will go towards SET/COSTUMES/LIGHTING & SOUND - (Our total budget is around $5000 for these design elements)
Our team of designers are: Chancie Jessop (Set/Costumes/Props + styling), Daniel Anderson (Lighting) and Rhody Nilon (Sound).
The Design: Our show is set in a bar : Imagine Hogs Breath combined with Mo's from the Simpsons...we are aiming to create an atmosphere filled with elements that everyone can relate to.. Memorabilia, bad neon lights, funky furniture, kitsch accessories as well as a karaoke machine, mirror balls and a number of other surpises. The money raised will cover any building materials and labour as well as purchasing/making of set and costume items.
Daniel Anderson's lighting design will transport us into the world of the bar and being the talented human that he is Dan is undertaking the creation of our very own signature Legless Bar Neon sign - this sign will be the pride of many a selfie we can guarantee it!
We are working with sound designer/technican Rhody Nilon to fully realise the soundscape of the Legless Bar - Rhody is a composer and designer with a flair for the electronic - we can't wait to share his work with you.
$500 from this campaign will go towards MARKETING: (Our total budget is around $1500 for our marketing campaign)
This will cover posters, postcards, our program, print and radio advertising as well as some very cool merchandise.
$500 from this campaign will help cover costs for our TECHNICAL TEAM DURING PERFORMANCE WEEKS. (Our total budget for this is approximately $2500)
The $500 from this campaign will help us cover the costs of 2 technicians full time for 2 days to help bump-in (set up) the show (set, lights, sound, AV) in the theatre (BPH). We then require a technician to run the show every night and to bump-out the show and equipment after the show is finished it's season. For our RPAC season we require 1 technician for 2 days.
The Challenges
We have a short period of time to raise these funds.
We know it's a huge undertaking to produce a successful independent show and that is why we decided to produce the work in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse.
As a company we are still developing our identity - so how do you know this will be a good show?
To date we have had an incredible amount of support - these allies have put their belief in us as a company to deliver a top class project and we have not let them down... so you can be guaranteed we will continue to perform at the very high standard we have set.
Here are some of our incredible supporters - without them we wouldn't be here today:
- Brisbane City Councils' Community Development and Capacity building grant: enabled us to get the company off the ground last year and present our first creative development of Look Mum... No Hands!!!
- Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund: to support the implementation of accessible performance strategies for audiences and performers.
- Brisbane Powerhouse: ongoing support through provision of twice weekly rehearsal space and perfomance space for our season in September.
- Nick Morrissey: Our photographer
- MND and Me: providing space for extra rehearsals and workshops for the company
- La Boite: rehearsal space and being part of La Boite HWY 2016
- QTC: rehearsal space
- Billy Blue school of Design: development of company re-branding and marketing campaign.
Why do we need your support?
Our company is endeavouring to be the first fully inclusive professional theatre company in Brisbane - this is no mean feat!
As company members we invest a lot of time and energy into this company and the benefits are many.
- diversity on our stages
- opportunites for artists with disabilities to be recognised for their art not their label.
- identity, purpose & self-confidence
- challenging perceptions: many of our artists are always told they will never achieve anything - we are here to shatter this perception and to focus on ability not disability.
TRUST:
We know that the one of the major keys to success is gathering the right team.
