To-Be-Frank (Short Film)
'To Be Frank' is a teenage dramatic short film being produced this Autumn on 16mm.
SYNOPSIS
Elijah is a confident and charming eighteen year old, who is almost at the end of his high school chapter and appears to have himself sorted out. His relationship with his girlfriend Willow, has them seen as the ‘perfect couple’ to their friends and family. However, trouble arises when Elijah develops feelings for Willow’s friend Frank.
Frank is a quiet and slightly elusive seventeen year old boy who befriended Willow in the early days of school. His mutual desire for Elijah conflicts with his close and beloved friendship with Willow.
Willow’s love for Elijah has clouded her concern in the past, but now she has become worried that he is hiding something from her. As she attempts to understand it, she tries to confide in Frank - without knowing that he is the reason she’s losing her love.
Trust wavers and emotions unfold, as Frank struggles to keep his secret, Willow begins to question her relationship, and Elijah tries not to hurt the girl he loves or the boy he desires.
PRODUCTION
Shot on location in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges, the film will feature the beauty of the landscape, as well as the use of pastels, soft light and dusk to play to the strengths of shooting on 16mm film.
Whilst the subject matter of sexuality featured in the film is highly relative to societal acceptance at this time, it is not the key focus; the film is predominately an exploration of love between these characters for who they are, and not concerned with their gender. We hope that this exploration of human relationships can help to normalise what can so commonly be made a fuss of in cinema.
How The Funds Will Be Used

The Challenges
As we are taking on the beautiful challenge of working with 16mm film, our project is accompanied by extra costs than a digital format would require. We are a small group of university students working together to produce this film, so as you can understand, we don't have overdoses of money to pour into it - as much as we would like to! Our target goal would cover the cost of purchasing our film stock and then give us a small amount left to help with the other costs listed above. We are so excited to start producing our story, and to work with the 16mm format, and would appreciate any contribution big or super small to help us complete it to the best standard possible.
