In the indigenous heart of Sydney, an up and coming street artist named Hego attempts to tell an untold side of Australian history through his latest work – a mural of an Aboriginal soldier of colossal proportions. With insightful interviews featuring direct relatives of the soldier depicted in the mural, local aboriginal elders and activists,  Black ANZAC follows Hego on his quest to create the largest wheatpasted mural in Australia to date and its positive impacts on the wider community.

HOW:
Filmmaker Tim Anastasi has been capturing Hego's endeavours since early 2014, initially as a simple documentation of his work as an up and coming Sydney street artist. While Hego's previous projects were already engaging and accessible to the public, the Black ANZAC mural was created in a highly visible location just days prior to ANZAC day, with the intention of bringing Indigenous contribution to ANZAC history to the wider public's attention.

As filming progressed, it became clear from both the positive reactions from the local Indigenous and non-Indigenous community, together with incredibly positive social media response that this was a powerful story that needed to be told. Not only did the mural bring Indigenous military contribution to the forefront, its presence on a prominent building rich in aboriginal history during the ANZAC day period was a rare shared experience for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities during a time of commemoration and reflection.

Tim and Hego realised that the story's striking visual aspects and insightful interviews would be best told through film, and thus the making of the documentary began.

AIM OF THE CAMPAIGN:
The aim now is to have the film completed by next year's ANZAC Day celebrations in April 2015. At present a majority of the footage has been shot, however in order to create a finished product that does justice to the inspiring results that transpired, we need YOUR support. As a family member, friend or member of the public who's been touched by the mural's story (be it through viewing it in real life or coming across this campaign!), your contribution will go to primarily towards hiring professional editors, sound mixers and post-production crew. in doing so, it will be ensured that the Black ANZAC mural's powerful and inspiring story will will be told in the best possible way!

Alot of thought has been put into the rewards we have on offer for every budget, and no matter how big or small your the amount, we sincerely believe you will be rewarded with an experience of the documentary well worth your money and effort. By doing so, you'll be making an invaluable contribution to not only realising the dreams of a couple of young Sydney talents, but more importantly you'll help bring to the screen a small but significant piece of Redfern and Sydney's history.

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Hego, Tim and Kimberley

How The Funds Will Be Used

As mentioned, a majority of footage has already been shot and the funds raised will go primarily towards basic post-production and festival submission costs.

Your generous contribution will be split between:

1. Editing $4000
2. Music $2000
3. Sound mixing $500
4. Graphic effects - $1000
5. Title design - $500
6. Travel costs - $300
7. Festival submission - $200
8. Campaign costs - $1500

But the above breakdown only covers the basic costs of completing the film. Any further funds raised will be most helpful in making the film richer, better and more accessible to all, by covering costs for animation, travel and accommodation costs for further filming in Melbourne and Adelaide, filming in the State Library and distribution costs.

The Challenges

The story of the Black ANZAC goes beyond Redfern and Sydney, spanning across both rural and urban Australia. As such, connecting with subjects who are dispersed across the country yet intergral to the story has already proven to be a challenge. The funds raised from the campaign would assist with this problem massively.

Show some love!

Our eternal gratitude and a shoutout on the film's Facebook page!
