Sonic Mayhem Orchestra exploded on the Sydney Jazz scene in February 2012 with a weekly residency at Blue Beat, Sydney. After 4 months the all original composition and/ or arrangement performing group moved on to do monthly specialised concerts at Blue Beat. They performed all original re workings of the music of Bob Marley, Ray Charles and Porgy and Bess, the jazz opera by Gershwin.
In July 2013 SMO began a weekly residency at Lazybones Lounge, Sydney. The band continues this residency to continues to perform all original arrangements and/or compositions there every Monday night. This is one seriously dedicated group of musicians and it is not all about the money!!
On October 11th 2013 SMO performed live at 505, Sydney with special guest and trumpet legend Scott Tinkler.
Two sets of blistering music was performed and recorded!! The first set original music by artistic director James Ryan. The second set was the reworking of Porgy and Bess featuring Scott Tinkler with JR conducting and the amazing Paul Cutlan on baritone sax and performing a beautiful bass clarinet feature.
