The 13-25yrs age group has been identified as a cancer population with unique needs that just aren't being met in today's medical system. Through creative initiatives we aim to raise awareness about adolescent and young adult cancer; raise funds for early diagnosis and specialty care for this age group; and help these young people come to terms with what most people keep hidden following cancer treatment - the physical scars that remind them of a grim, painful experience.

But we cannot achieve our goals alone.

We have taken more than 40 scar portraits, with 11 professional photographers, exhibited in Queensland and Victoria. We will power forward in showing the 'pretty' and 'gritty' side of cancer through a range of creative endeavors to achieve our mission...

The first is a Scar Stories coffee table book, that will feature the Scar Stories portraits along with some of the amazing stories about the scars.

Some of the images may shock you. Some may bring you to tears. Hopefully, ultimately you will be inspired by the tenacity and courage of these young (and young at heart) people. Win or lose, they have fought for their lives and by sharing their scars through photographs and stories, have gained a new perspective on life and their journey, seeing their scars in a new light - one that is empowering and beautiful.




Jasmine Gailer, cancer survivor and founder of Scar Stories believes that having her scar photographed was the best therapy. "I no longer felt like it was something to hide, but rather something that made me interesting," she said. She decided in 2011, after being in remission only eight months, to start Scar Stories as a way to help others come to terms with their scars in the way she had. The proceeds of the first exhibitions were donated to CanTeen, an organisation that had helped her in her recovery after treatment.

Jasmine Gailer, founder of Scar Stories, and Kylie Cobb, Marketing and Design Director, have been working tirelessly to design a 'coffee table'-style book that shows the incredible talent of the photographers who have been involved, and the true beauty of the cancer patients and survivors who have courageously made their scars and stories public. As Scar Stories is a project run entirely on sponsorship and donated time, we need your help to get this amazing book from file to print! Each year we receive small sums of money through sponsorship, however the volunteers involved are often left out of pocket. The $15,000 figure that we are asking for covers all costs involved in making and distributing the book, as well as partially contributing to other 2014 events.

To celebrate its creation, once printed, Scar Stories will hold an exciting launch event in Brisbane that will not disappoint. After a benefit concert put on by Hunters & Collectors in January, there's no telling who will be involved in Scar Stories biggest fundraising event this year!

Doug Falconer, drummer of iconic Aussie rock band Hunters & Collectors, is Scar Stories' first official ambassador. "After viewing the Melbourne Scar Stories exhibition in 2012, I got to know Jasmine and was surprised and very pleased when she approached me to become an ambassador," Doug said. "The photographs are incredibly moving and demonstrate a great deal of bravery and resilience from young people challenged in a way most of us never will be."

We are also stoked to announce that Aussie rock band, Dallas Frasca, has recently jumped on board to Champion Scar Stories.

Help us get this book off the ground! In doing so you will be supporting Australian photographers, musicians, artists, cancer survivors, and cancer support organisations.

Without enough funds, we cannot create this book in a way that does our photographers and Scar Stories survivors justice! We need to produce a stunning collection of these portraits so we can continue to generate profits to send to great cancer organisations like CanTeen and implement creative initiatives to help young adults with cancer.

Finding the right printer/publisher will be a challenge we may face during this campaign, as we want to keep the book price to an affordable $50.
