Creatures Within

I, for once, would like to be a BEAST....

We are Creatures Within, a Melbourne based theatre company creating original works orientated around animal archetypes and movement. We are thrilled to announce the return season of Child's Play, written and performed by Jem Nicholas, directed by Ellie Morgan.

Don't be fooled by its size, this play has teeth. And we have been dreaming up some creative rewards, inspiring you to come along and see the performance and to show your support through donations big and small. 

Our storytelling is highly physical and very imaginative. We bring tales of mythology to life through the body and voice. Child’s Play, a grown-up fairy tale with BITE does just that. It’s a one-woman show exploring two fables and shape-shifts them into bigger, hairier versions truly fit for the adult, but without leaving behind the inner-child.

ABOUT

Nina Red (of the Riding Hood) has volunteered to go into the forbidden forest and defeat the black shadow. But even she can’t turn her back on her wild side. When her body starts to transform, she is forced to choose between her human life, or that of the wolves.

Jem will again embody 16 human characters and 7 animal characters to explore the masculine and feminine life-force, personal bravery and the depth of the human heart. She asks the vital question, ‘Can true power be in the little things?’ 

Physical freedom is essential to this work. It requires very little in the way of costume and set design. We really do strip it all back to the bare bones of a body in a space.

But we couldn’t do this show in a small theatre. We need room to MOVE!

This is why we have chosen The MC Showroom to house this magical show. It has enough room for all the animals and an entire kingdom to come to life.

And the theatre itself is beautiful.

We are asking for your assistance to help us cover the cost of the venue hire and to pay for our lighting designer to design and operate the show.

We are also working with the incredibly generous and tallented sound designer Steve Carnell from company Insert Melody Here. As we have re-written the script, so we need new music. 

The remainder of our funds will be used to pay for the hidden, unexpected costs that arise with producing an original work of theatre.
