“I’m trying to tackle the negative reputation that my generation has earned itself. We need to prove we’re not all apathetic, drug-munching, no-brainers. We do have something intelligent to offer and we’re not afraid of having political punch. It’s about time we believed in something.”
- Ella Hickson

In a time where the rates of unemployment have skyrocketed, welfare claims are under fire, and job prospects quantify worth --there's more fight in Gen Y than anyone had ever thought.
After rave reviews at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival, ‘Eight’ by Ella Hickson went on to win the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award, the NSDF Emerging Artists Award and the Carol Tambor ‘Best of Edinburgh’ Award.
Ella scoured the country in search of good stories, asking Gen Y'ers from a range of vastly different backgrounds “What defines your generation?” ‘Eight’ is comprised of fifteen minute monologues showing a state-of-the-British-nation portrait not far removed from our own.

NOW WE ARE BRINGING THE SHOW TO SYDNEY, TO YOU!
‘Eight’ gives often neglected, unspoken-for characters a chance to take centre-stage:
1. an ex-soldier who makes friends in the morgue
2. a Scottish ‘lass’ single mother facing poverty
3. a matriarchal high class hooker with a patriotic chip on her shoulder
4. a private school boy learning sex in the south of France
5. an art dealer who finds an unlikely visitor hanging from the rafters of his gallery
6. a drunk young woman at a crossroads
7. a mystic pregnant youth with a fierce secret
8. an American businessman who has lost everything except his memories of the 7/7 London bombings
What happens to a named-and-shamed Generation? You’re invited to meet them; to witness their electric triumphs, their crushing failures, their bittersweet redemption, their confronting truths and the unexpected glimmers of faith amongst a landscape of wholesale cynicism and drastic financial recession.
It’s a bloody good show. Just saying.
HOWEVER, there is a very significant CATCH.

We live in an age of hyper choice.
Every night the audience will have a LIVE VOTE over who they want to see.
You can only choose 5.
This means that the show is DIFFERENT every night.
As different and as opinionated as it’s audience...
COME SEE US. SUPPORT US. MAKE YOUR VOTE HEARD.

How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds that you pledge for our project will first and foremost be put towards covering major upfront costs. Here's our budget for the detail:

While these costs may seem rather mundane, they are essential to the production moving forward, as these must be paid well before the show even goes up. To date company members have put their hard earned funds into the project and your help will lift a significant financial burden from the team so we can focus on producing the best possible show.
In the event that we do make a profit on this show, we have two main goals. To firstly use the money that we earn to give some monetary remuneration to the creatives involved. And secondly use that money towards touring Eight throughout other parts of Australia, along with other future creative projects.
The Challenges
To cement the authenticity of the show, dialect coaching to perfect the myriad of regional sounds is incredibly important - this requires the guidance of an experienced voice coach.
We also need to pay Ella Hickson for the rights to perform 'Eight', and the Sydney Fringe for the rent of our theatre space. To protect our actors and the company we require Insurance. To make sure that the play and it's relevance reaches it's audience we'd like to get some advertising materials made up as we have the fantastic photographer Jeffrey Feng on board, and a terrific graphic designer working together to shape the advertising scope of the show- their work is terrific and deserves to be seen. And, there are a range of prop, costuming, lighting and set items we'll require to make the show work.
