Overview
Jack and Coby is a short film about a boy Coby and his cousin Jack growing up. Jack is an old soul who Coby looks up to greatly, but as they get older, it seems like everybody knows something about Jack except Coby. What is his family keeping from him? and why is Jack always "unwell". Are Jack and Coby drifting apart as friends/cousins? or are they closer than ever before?
The short film follows Coby throughout his life from 1983-2003, as Jack breezes in and out of it. I, James O'Connor will direct the film, as I have written it. I am expecting an October 2013 release.
When I first read my brothers short story, all i could think was "Wow". It brought back so many memories. "Stubborn Matt" we called him; he was an important part of my childhood. I was 12 years younger than my brother and his cousin Matt. I write about Matt in my blog.

Budget
I hope I am able to make this film. I know I can with the right funds. The most important thing I need money for right now is lenses. I currently have a "nifty fifty" Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, which is usable but the picture i get from this lens is not spectacular, a 58mm Helios f/2 lens, which is nice and sharp, a Canon FD 100-200mm lens which is terrible and an 18-55mm Canon kit lens, which is about the same in terms of image quality as the 50mm; but the aperture on this lens is not good enough. I am intending on purchasing a Samyang 35mm T/1.5 Cine lens for $500 and a Samyang 14mm T/3.1 Cine lens for $450. Second most important are lights. All I have are Halogen floodlights and home made CFL lights. They just don't quite cut it. New lights (Such as some Lowell DP or Flolight) will take the visuals of this film up a notch. These lights are all over $500 each!
I also have a terrible, terrible PC. 2GB of RAM make video editing excruciatingly slow and tedious. I need ~$800 to finish a build I have already begun to collect parts for.Origins
Jack and Coby began as a short story written in the small amount of spare time my brother Nicholas J Costa had whilst working as a banker. Feeling let down by himself after his failure to make it into the music industry, he began to dwell upon his life. He wrote this story about himself and his cousin Matthew, who was his best friend. It follows the two as they grow from children to adults. But along the way, Nick (Coby) began to notice something odd about Matt (Jack). It was like a gigantic secret was being with-held from him. Everyone knew but him.
This short film is an adaptation on the that original short story. Money is necessary to produce the best possible film. This really is a passion project. Nicholas himself is composing for the film.
Film. It is my life. It's all I can think about, all I can do, is film, film, film.
Filming will take place pretty much where the story is set, Geelong, Victoria and Terang, Victoria. Terang is a small country town (and the town where I grew up) with amazing country views and people. I hope this film will be able to show the pure glory of the town. Seriously. It's good.
