An enormous THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us so far! We have reached our initial funding target but will be accepting further donations until June 6. Every extra dollar means more amazing sound design, tastier catering, gorier gore and wormier worms. We will also be offering daily, unique rewards for these further donations - so come say hi at fb.com/hungrymanmovie for more details!

In June 2012, writer/director Jordan Prosser and producer Steven McKinnon will be making the short film Hungry Man, a neo-noir / gothic-horror fantasy fable about a man, his psychotic tapeworm, and the young girl that comes between them. To help the story reach its full potential, and to meet the logistical and technical demands of such a project, we are seeking $3000 to further extend the production values for this ambitious and multi-faceted project.

THE STORY

Declan Greene has lived his whole life with a psychotic, talking tapeworm living inside him. Together they have tasted the rarest, most exotic and forbidden black-market foods from the darkest corners of the globe, trying to satisfy their insatiable appetite. After a business deal gone bad, Declan and the worm find themselves on the streets of a nameless, seething metropolis, on the run from a duo of slippery mobsters. Declan checks in to the decaying Buchanan Hotel where he meets Jennifer Feathers, a curious, plucky young girl who sees him as a kindred spirit. Threatened by their relationship, and with the forces of the underworld slowly closing in, the worm manipulates Declan in to hunting down the one special delicacy they have yet to sample - human flesh.

THE PRODUCTION

Making the story of Hungry Man come to life has so far taken over three months, eleven drafts of the script, and the tireless efforts of a large and talented behind-the-scenes team. In mid-June we will be building an array of full-scale studio sets to replicate the pivotal location of the hotel, and shooting for seven days before commencing a three-month editing and sound design process. The film will premiere in December at the annual VCA Film & Television Screenings at ACMI in Federation Square, Melbourne, before being submitted to film festivals across Australia and the world over.

THE MONEY

At the heart of the work involved in making Hungry Man is a team of passionate volunteers, be they well-established industry creatives or fellow students at the Victorian College of the Arts. But beyond talent and commitment there are elements to a film which can not be had for free. A film like Hungry Man in particular demands complex and fully-realised visual and aural designs in order for the story to work.

More than twenty builders will be hiring dozens of flats, preparing them and hand-applying hundreds of metres of wallpaper to build a set with working doors, floating walls, retractable chandeliers, rain machines and a replica monorail beyond the windows. We need to pay for a recording studio to allow an improvisational electro-jazz ensemble record a free-form score for the film, and have the location audio, foley, special sound effects and music all recorded, mastered and mixed. We need to feed scores of volunteers, most of whom will be taking unpaid time off from work or giving up their university holidays to work long hours in the studio and on location. And we need to pay for the materials to create the absolutely pivotal, special-effects heavy showdown sequence. Throats will be cut, gizzards will be spilled, and it will all be there on-screen in perfect, grizzly, gory glory... we hope.

The money we raise will be put exclusively towards the elements of the film which no amount of passion or ingenuity can conjure up for free - but those which are essential to the proper realisation of the story.
