The Marco Polo Project is back on pozible!

The Marco Polo Project is an organisation that uses the possibilities of online collaboration to improve cultural and linguistic understanding between China and the West.

We publish an online magazine presenting a diverse selection of new writing from China – non-fiction and social commentary from leading intellectuals and independent bloggers - and engage a multilingual community to collaborate on their translation.

In December 2012, we raised $3000 to develop a set of new features on our website, making it funner to use and more attractive to translators. We delivered on that commitment, and launched a new version of the Marco Polo Project on July 2, with a fresh look and feel, and improved functionalities - you can check it out here!

We know that online communities benefit from face-to-face engagement - and that's why we're proposing to run a pilot translation event on the 14th of August. The event will take the form of a 2h30 'all-you-can-translate' writing sprint, followed by a wine-down allowing our translators to chat and exchange tips and insights. The event will be held at the York Butter Factory.

We will record, evaluate and fully document the event. If it proves fruitful, we will invite language learning organisations to run similar translation evenings, in order to grow local translation communities, motivate Chinese learners in their efforts, and help bring more voices from China to Western readers.

We're raising $250 to run this pilot event. The funds will go towards catering for the event, offering some small rewards to our most productive participants, and offering small rewards to our interns in charge of organising, documenting and evaluating the night.

Help us bring this community together, help us make these new writers available in English - and you can share a glass of wine with us, or a dinner with our founder. Word on the street is, he knows how to cook. Really, you should pledge!

Feel good reward Chinese words of wisdom and a personalised thank you note.
