What is the Offcast/Castoff Project?

Do we care where they've gone, or just that they've gone?

The Offcast/Castoff Project is a multimedia performance installation by Kate Buttery and Sarah Breen, two Footscray based artists. We are using the ubiquitous graveyard of discarded TVs on the naturestrip as a provocation for a wider look at rubbish and what we might wish to discard. It has an obvious environmental theme, but it's central point is really using the TVs and rubbish as a metaphor for people who can sometimes be regarded in a similar way to the TVs. Offcast/Castoff asks the question "Do we care about where things or people go, or just that they go?".

Offcast/Castoff is the first major piece of self-penned work that artist Kate Buttery has undertaken. It is the culmination of her studies in the Theatre department at La Trobe University, and of her 23 years spent as a performer in the fields of music and theatre. Playwright Sarah Breen has come on board as Kate's artistic collaborator, as her fantastic knack for capturing the absurdities of every day life in her writing are perfect for what is at the heart of the Offcast/Castoff Project.

Behind everything we discard is a story.  Offcast tells stories from the heart of Footscray.

When will the Offcast/Castoff Project be?

The Offcast/Castoff Project is already underway, discarded TVs are collected, rehearsals are underway, and some paste-ups have started around Footscray.  It's a devised work, so it will evolve over the coming weeks and will be Installed and Performed in Effemera Gallery in October.

The Offcast Project is excited to announce our dates and venue.

Where is Offcast/Castoff at right now?

You can find out more about the project on our Facebook Page and on Twitter, and here are a few little tidbits of what we've been up to already...

Part of our paste up campaign:

Kate at work with the 'Rubbish Art'

Sarah at work with the 'Rubbish Art'

One of our 'Rubbish Art' Paste ups

Ok, so yeah it's more of a 'Held Up' than a 'Paste Up', so we pasted it to the building

And another 'Rubbish Art' paste up

These images, as well as being a little bit of free Public Art for Footscray, will also be part of the multimedia aspect of Offcast/Castoff, and will feature played through the backdrop of found TVs that will form part of our installation. We will post snippets of the multimedia here and on our Facebook page as they come to hand.  The paste ups are just a tiny element of Offcast/Castoff. The project will feature local stories and images from Footscray, and will uncover hidden and possibly untold stories.

What else have the Offcast/Castoff artists been up to?

Kate's work crosses many platforms. Here are three of them...
Visual:
Untitled - Acrylic on Canvas, 2003

Poetry:
The wreck of Western Culture.
The Protestant ethic and the spirit of Capitalism
a kind of violence causing death and saving lives.

Being and nothingness making history
Plays an equal music
Plays naked logic.

Utilitarianism, on liberty and considerations on representative government
beyond good and evil.

What fresh hell is this?

Vie de Bohème.
