What happens when you put 78 women, all passionate scientists, on board a ship bound for Antarctica? Probably a lot of things…and in December 2016 I’m looking forward to finding out!
I’m one of the 78 scientists who have been selected from around the world to participate in the Homeward Bound project in Antarctica. This journey is designed to be the catalyst for the development of world-wide coalition of women scientists with the strategic capacity to drive global change.
Homeward Bound is an inspiring leadership and strategic initiative teamed with a science education program for women. As scientists we have a focus on climate, biological and Earth system research. Together we will be making the most of this opportunity to become leaders and influencers in climate change dialogues through:
- Working with leaders in Antarctic science to develop our technical knowledge of Polar Science and its implications for Climate change
- Training with experts in strategy and innovation to enhance our leadership, executive and strategic capabilities
- In undertaking this journey together we will be building a collaborative network with a shared vision for a sustainable future. Every one of us will be coming home with a personal and a collective plan for change.
To make sure what happens on the ship doesn’t stay on the ship, our journey and learning will be recorded via a team of documentary makers including Greer Simpkin formerly of the ABC and David Jowsey of Bunya Productions. This documentary will be aired around the world.
By taking this journey together we envision the experience will create strong bonds, inspire action and lead to extraordinary collaborations.

How The Funds Will Be Used
It will be an experience of a lifetime but it will take a huge amount of support and determination to get there - and I’d really appreciate your help!
A project of this magnitude is costly, including travel from Australia to Ushuaia, boat hire, insurance and equipment as well as safe transport for my ukelele!
Antarctica is a place of inspiration, deep reflection and extremes – in the company of 77 other women scientists I hope to come back inspired, recharged and ready to change the world.
