The Reflected Legacy project will bring comfort, support and creativity to the Liverpool Palliative Care Ward.
It will transform a grey hospital ward with colour and conversation, and capture the life stories of people who are in the final stages of their lives, in beautiful visual artworks and sound recordings.
The Groundswell Project, a not-for-profit arts and health organisation leading the Australian conversation around death and dying, have been working with the staff at the Palliative Care ward in Liverpool Hospital to implement a new arts and health program. After months of planning and consultation, we are delighted to be working with Flutter Lyon to deliver the Reflected Legacy Project.
Australian artist Flutter Lyon will lead a residency program using her unique Ink-Pressing art form and the experience of her Pressing Sessions. Pressing Sessions invite a guest to sit with the artist and share their life stories of courage, freedom, joy, love and resilience. While they speak, Flutter applies ink lines and colours to fresh cotton paper, creating a stunning symmetrical 'life map' of the stories. An original artwork that becomes a visual biography; a record of legacy and life.

This powerful experience, when taken into the palliative care space, merges art and health in a whole new way. Providing a process and tangible outcome that connects the patients and their loved ones, inviting reflection and a way of understanding the beauty and meaning of their lives and relationships. This project breaks new ground in Australia and is the first of its kind in Liverpool Hospital. We are so passionate about bringing this program to the diverse, culturally rich community of Liverpool and greater Western Sydney.
PROJECT OUTCOMES: The Reflected Legacy Program, Exhibition & Book
1. Flutter Lyon will deliver her legacy and conversation Pressing Session experience in Liverpool Hospital palliative care ward with approximately 30 patients. This involves the artist, the patient and their family, sharing stories about the patient's life experiences whilst Flutter:
(a) creates an Ink-Pressing artwork as a visual record; and
(b) makes a sound recording.
The artwork and the sound recording are then given to the patient and their family as a gift of art and legacy.
2. Patients and families are invited to participate in a public exhibition. If they agree, patients' artworks plus a major artwork inspired by the stories Flutter witnesses during the residency will be held at Liverpool Hospital. Families, patients, staff and crowdfunding supporters are invited to the launch.
3. A book of artwork and excerpts from patients' stories is published. The book will encourage and empower readers to generate and capture their own legacy conversations by providing conversation starters, positive messages and insights into the death and dying process for Australians. The book will feature a foreword by internationally renowned palliative care advocate and author, Mollie Carlile AM.
