WE'RE GREENLIT BY METROSCREEN!!
This 10-minute short horror film is backed by NSW Government film body, METROSCREEN through their 'Breaks - Story to Screen' funding. We will receive $4000 cash budget and $1500 in-kind equipment hire. Director, Tommie McSweeney and Producer, Kieran Cato are turning to crowd funding to raise the remaining capital required to produce a short film that will stand out internationally.
What's it about?
A film within a film Il Taglialegna (The Woodcutter) follows the budding romance of modern-day teenagers Ollie and Alexandra from the nostalgic projection room and cinema of Sydney's iconic Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace into the eerie 1930s Italian countryside. Questioning the curse of the rare 1930's film reel in their possession, the teens discover the horrors of The Woodcutter as the boundaries between reality and fantasy become beautifully blurred. Why make this short?
To become a director, Tommie needs to direct. To become a producer, Kieran needs to produce. While both Tommie and Kieran have both worked in various positions on feature films, to step up as DIRECTOR & PRODUCER of FEATURE FILMS, Tommie and Kieran need to make "The Woodcutter" as a stepping stone toward that journey. This film reflects the type of movies they want to make -- films that are appealing to large audiences and are successful enough commercially to sustain many more films being made in Australia.
Why $7000?
Making movies is heck darn expensive. If you want to impress people and compete in prestigious film festivals such as Sundance and Berlin, your film needs to look like a REAL film. While our talented actors and crew are professionals with years of industry experience they will be working for free, thus reducing the budget significantly. We still need to cover the following expenses:Equipment: Cameras, lenses, mics, mixers, jibs, dollies, lighting.
Locations: Our single largest expense is to pay to shoot in the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace.
Catering: Feeding everyone working on the film.
Sound Mix: Professional mix of the final audio of the film.
Colour Grade: Professional colouring, shot-by-shot of the final film.
Favourite films/Inspiration:
Tommie's favourite films are Children of Men, Pans Labyrinth, Alien, Terminator and Jurassic Park.
Kieran's favourite films are The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Snatch, The Usual Suspects, The Lord of the Rings, The Shawshank Redemption and City of God.
Directors Statement:
The first draft script of ‘The Woodcutter’ from 2007 was abysmal. But when I pitched the IDEA, people thought Il Taglialegna was a real film with a real curse!! I knew then I had to make it. It’s taken six years but its finally ready, more importantly, I’m finally ready.
Everything in my life has lead to making this film, through all my experiences with life and relationships, to all the things I’ve learnt about telling a good story with moving images. It’s time to make my first short film since 2007.
Il Taglialegna will be good enough that it’s worth going through the time, effort, expense and sacrifice it takes to make a film.
Effectively a film about a film Il Taglialegna follows commercial horror genre conventions by setting young people alone in a dark, empty, venue with no way of getting any help – they are in peril without even knowing it.
We have already shot the 1930’s woodcutter footage to mimic an Italian period film consisting of jumpy, dark, black & white, vignetted footage. I’m ecstatic with this authentic 16mm footage and looking forward to projecting it for real in the cinema during the next part of shooting.
Il Taglialegna (The Woodcutter) embodies everything I like about movies; I want to make it because I want to see it. It’s a genre film, but like some of my favourite films - Avatar and Star Wars - it transcends its genre and encourages the audience to follow the journey of its likable characters.
These types of films attract massive audiences and take you on a cinematic journey to another universe. To be shown wonderous possibilities from the depths of human hopes & dreams - this is my kind of film.
Audience & Distribution:
At first, top tier International festivals will be targeted for entry: Sundance, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, South by Southwest, Venice, Clermont-Ferrand, Raindance and hopefully a world premiere will be secured.Also Australian festivals entered: AACTA, Sydney Film festival, Miff, Flickerfest, St.Kilda, Australian Film Festival hopefully for an Australia premiere. ‘Without A Box’ will be utilized.
After the festival run we’ll approach ‘Short Attention’. One of the few short film sales agents that happens to be in Australia! If they’re not interested in selling the film then others will be approached such as ‘Future Shorts’ or ‘Shorts International’. Hopefully they can on sell the film to TV, cable networks, Apple TV, airlines etc.
