Behind the Words is Melbourne’s premier Community Television program dedicated to Australian literature, art and culture. Our third season will continue with the delightful Presenters – Kirsty Snowden, Jess Chiapolino, Troy Cartwright and Vincent Conti – showcasing a diverse range of writers, artists, musicians and performers – focusing on their relationship with language and the creative process.

The Pozible Campaign is centred on raising production funds to assist with covering the ever present costs of our third season.

Behind the Words first aired on C31 Melbourne/Geelong during December 2011. The impetus of the series was a combination of factors. During 2009, I volunteered to work as a Writer on ‘Fusion Latina’ and enjoyed the concept of Community Television. I was fortunate to up-skill my understanding of camera and lights via a C31/Open Channel course in 2011 – the catch was that I had to submit footage filmed from a Community Television series to pass the course. In 2010, my first novella ‘Distance’ was published through Melbourne Books. It was a struggle to gain media attention to discuss/review the work. And this frustration of not being able to talk about the creative process of writing was the spark that created the television series Behind the Words. A television series dedicated to independent artists providing a medium to discuss the creative process behind their work. Behind the Words allows exploration of contemporary word usage in the wider community.

Our first season was a steep learning curve of 8-episodes. I was surprised at how willing established and unknown artists were in making the time to be interviewed about their process of creating or developing projects. There was a hidden agenda at play. I wanted to know how fellow Australian writers balanced family-work-life-writing commitments. The first season allowed the opportunity to ask that question – and a couple of responses still hold true are (going on memory here with exact wording) – Joel Deane ‘steals time’ between commitments while he was writing ‘The Norseman’s Song’, Wayne Macauley gets up early to write before heading off to work and Chris Womersley writes ‘whenever, wherever’. In other words, there are no excuses. If you have the belief in the project, then you will find the time to work on that project.

Our second season of 11-episodes was a vast improvement on production and it looked as though we actually knew what we were doing.

Again, the list of talented individuals interviewed during BTW2 left a big impression on me – there was a gap in the marketplace for artists to discuss their relationship with language and creative processes.

The BTW Team thoroughly enjoy making the show – squeezing in pre-production/production/post-production between family/work commitments plus other creative projects. But the reality is, there are monetary costs in bringing to the public sphere a new series of Behind the Words and hence the Pozible Campaign.
