You’re Invited! Become part of the indie filmmaking process!
Breeding in Captivity is a unique feature film script born out of an intensive story collaboration between director Lucien Simon and actors Grant Cartwright, Sara Pensalfini, Sara Cooper, Marisa Mastrocola, Matt Stolp, Rachael Williams, Abbey Rose Leed, Steve Jones, Lauren O’Keefe and Nathan Spencer.
Think Mike Leigh - actors immersed themselves in their characters and entered into scenarios based on the film’s story outline and improvised all of the drama and dialogue under the guidance of the director. Over 100 hours of footage was filmed during this process and it is the best 90 minutes that is this beast of a script. This process has ensured that we have created an authentic, raw and contemporary story now screaming to be made and shared in cinemas across Australia and around the globe.

BUT... we need YOUR help to make this happen, as we try to raise $10,000.
Why? BIC to this point has been entirely self-funded, and even our pooled financial resources will not allow us to take this film through to principal photography. We have a number of fundraising events planned and we have been lucky enough to acquire much in-kind sponsorship from local business to help us shoot our film, but 10,000 crowdfunding dollars will allow us to pay for the unavoidable bare essentials we still need to successfully complete the principal photography phase of this journey. These include: catering, set materials, and some equipment hire. It will also allow us to gain further funding from other resources ... but we need the first $10,000! This story is now, these characters are now and this film is now.
Will YOU join us on this once in a lifetime thrill ride?
We'd love to have you!

A love story in the most unlikely of settings.
BIC is a story about love in a time when romance is road kill and we are choosing to mate for convenience. It is a black comedy drama about a subject we spend our adult lives talking about – sex and relationships, yet despite this incessant chatter and the countless experiences of love and loss, our behaviour in love remains as mysterious as the brain or those incredible deep sea creatures. It is a heartfelt exploration into the secret territory of sex and marriage, questioning how can we mate for life, truly love, and honour the animal within. A moving, dark, and sometimes funny film that acknowledges the fallible nature of human beings in love and the animal inside us all.

Our story.
Owen and Alice Hargreaves never forget they are married, but sometimes forget they are in love. Routine and responsibility, stalled careers and school fees, zumba and missionary sex have slowly beaten them into a caged submission and they are now both on the edge. In the wake of a neighbourhood tragedy Owen hits the road for what should be a routine work trip, leaving Alice at home to deal with the aftermath of what took place and the strangers who have moved in next door. Catapulted out of each others orbit and into a world of hedonism and depravity, the couple will be forced to confront the other and face the realisation that outside the cage what seemed like freedom may be their demise.

How does pozible work?
It's pretty simple:
*We set a goal ($10,000).
*We set a deadline (August 11).
*You pledge whatever you can to help us reach that goal. Bigger pledges get bigger rewards from us (like a copy of the movie when it comes out on DVD, for instance).
*If we reach (or hopefully far exceed) our goal by the deadline, your credit card is charged, we get our funding, and you get the cool reward you chose.
*If we don't reach our goal by the deadline, your credit card is NOT charged, and you do NOT get the cool rewards. It's okay to exceed our goal (in which case we can provide extra set materials, costumes etc beyond our bare minimum requirements) but it's NOT okay to make even a cent less than our goal. - In short, we have to make our goal by the deadline, or we don't get our funding, and you don't get your rewards.

What rewards?
You get something for your money... even if you pledge as little as $2. Just check out the cool, unique, and meaningful rewards on the right hand side of your screen. Pick something you like (may we suggest a package that includes the special edition DVD of the movie with tons of extras? Starting at $50) and please pledge as much as you can, because your pledges will help us make this film in the spirit it deserves and increase our chances of attracting funding or investors to support our post-production phase.

Why should you support this movie?
We'd never ask you to give a shit about something we wouldn't put ourselves on the line for... and that's why we have devoted, to date, over a year and a half and a lot of our own cash, sweat and tears into producing this script and getting it ready for the market. Why?

We Believe In This Project - And We Believe in You
We all know that the arts, like many industries, is underfunded, and it has been especially hard for a bunch of relative unknowns to secure funding for such a process-driven feature film concept such as this. But we know we are onto something, so we are doing it ourselves. We believe wholeheartedly in this project and are excited by its process-driven vision and authentic story bursting with honesty, and we want to share it. We share a passion for the transformative power of cinema and its ability to wake us to ourselves. To make the film we want to make with the people we want to make it with we thought we might have to go it alone. In our hearts, we felt that when the time came, real people just like you would embrace the movie.
That time is now, and we're asking you to give a shit, however briefly or cheaply, about this project we believe in so much. Pledge whatever you can to Breeding in Captivity right now and help us make something worthwhile.

Thank you and much love Lucien, Larelle, Sara and the whole BIC pack.

Now we want to hear from you!
You've donated! You're part of the pack! Now speak up!
We know that it this not all about us. This project is also about creating a new way of working in film and making it sustainable and viable. It’s about contributing to the wider creative community and we hope the film itself will be a calling card for the possibilities of making films using this collaborative approach. So we want to hear your voice on this project and campaign. After you pledge support for the project, email us via [email protected] and let us know that you intend to create a video message, and we will shoot you back a dropbox link for you to upload your sexy mug so we can then put you on our site! Tell us why you pledged, why you gave a shit, and what direction you’d like to see this creative landscape take, basically your thoughts, and you can become part of the BIC pack that is standing up, making something new and giving a shit!

Local and loving it!
With most of the BIC team calling themselves proud Tasmanians. BIC could be the first Tasmanian produced feature film shown in Australian Cinemas since Roger Scholes’ “The Tale of Ruby Rose” in 1987. BIC could end this drought. Help us take this story, this state, this team, to the world!

Now we will shut up! Thanks for connecting! Please choose your reward and donate today!

Please note: The Executive Producer credit does not equate to an equity stake in the film. It is illegal for us to do so and is a breach of the crowd funding regulations. Please do contact us if you have any questions.

xx

Lucien and Sara, along with other key devisers started working on BIC together, travelling between Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne in 2010. Mast Films Pty Ltd has been created to take their project to the big screen. They feel it is time to finally let this animal out of its cage.

Grant Cartwright unfortunately had to withdraw from Breeding in Captivity in July. His mug will stay on our Pozible video and he wishes us the most incredible success for the future! Thanks Grant and his crowdfunding partner in crime Matt Ford for giving us such an awesome start to our campaign!
