The Woolgatherer is American playwright William Mastrosimone's haunting tale about two strangers that have a profound effect on each other's lives. Mastrosimone wrote this play in 1979 and it is hardly known in Australia. This was one of the major influences in deciding to put on this production - we believed more people should hear this story. It is about the loneliness that effects human beings, our search for meaning, humour and companionship.

When asked to think about my own encounters with strangers I struggled to recall many that were meaningful. Walking down the street, or sitting on the tram, all I can remember is everyone on their phones. This is why this story is important. Generally, people aren't connecting as much anymore, people are afraid or isolated or disinterested. But collectively, as a human race, we need each other.

After approaching acclaimed actor and teacher Kerry Armstrong to direct, we found the ultimate location for this intimate piece - the iconic and independent La Mama theatre in Carlton. While La Mama is very supportive of a wide range of creative projects, funding is limited. Seating at La Mama is also limited, and door prices are affordable for all.

Our season is in conjunction with the Melbourne Fringe Festival and we have only been allocated 6 shows. Therefore, our door takings are also limited. This means we need to raise a small amount of funds in order to sufficiently pay our creative team who work incredibly hard:
This is where you come in!

The Challenges

It is always a challenge to put on independent theatre with limited time, limited funds and a very small creative team. This will not stop us!

Our biggest challenge will be raising the funds we need to pay our creative team in time. None of us want to leave Gina, Emily or Chris without the payment they deserve! If we do not raise the funds in time, the money will be coming out of our pockets. This is why we need your help!

Love and thank you's from the team, plus a personalised thanks on Facebook.
