The Invisible Picture Show

Combining real children's voices from inside detention with powerful animation

Hundreds of thousands of children worldwide are affected by immigration detention. Children fleeing war, violence, famine and poverty are too often met with iron bars and isolation. Hidden from the public, they are vulnerable to abuse and often lack adequate access to medical care and education. The media are routinely denied access to detention centres, meaning that it is very difficult for the world to find out about or understand the plight of children in detention. These children are, in many respects, invisible. The 'Invisible Picture Show' will help make the invisible visible by using real voices from children in detention.

Using exclusive interviews recorded during telephone calls to children locked up in detention centres in one of four countries (Australia, Greece, South Africa and the United States) talented animators will bring the words of these children to life, creating a powerful, extraordinary visual experience to express the world of each child.

The end result will be a multi-platform animated documentary that exposes the inhumane practice of detaining child refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. The essence of the film will be the real, grainy voice recordings of the children detained.

The 'Invisible Picture Show' will be a powerful advocacy and awareness raising tool. A first preview has been screened at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in September 2012, where it reached government delegations directly. It has thus paved the way for advocacy meetings and policy discussions.

Following this international debut, the film will be given a multiplatform release, accessible on a unique website that hosts information, resources and films that further expose the issue of child detention and support individuals and organisations to campaign against it. An interactive webpage, YouTube Channel, Twitter feeds and social media will ensure widespread circulation of the film. (See www.endchiddetention.org for a preview of the test website and to sign the online petition!)

HOW WILL WE USE YOUR MONEY?

Given that both the director and the animators have agreed to a very low fee, the film will be produced using small budget. However, things like colour grading, mixing, editing, translation and subtitling, in addition to music, are crucial to the production of any film and, more often than not, add to its impact. To do this, we will be working with London-based professional production company, Faction Films.

If your donations amount to 15.000 Australian Dollars or 10.000 Pounds, we will employ those funds to develop an online strategy, as well as an interactive website that will support the film with extra material, linking it to the campaign and other human rights movements.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
My name is Tim Travers Hawkins and I'm the director of Invisible Picture Show. Three years ago I made a similar animated documentary called "1000 Voices" which looked at the indefinite detention of asylum seekers in the UK.
To hear the voices of those we are forbidden to see is a powerful and emotive experience and to make the invisible visible through animation, is a kind of artistic alchemy. Despite the almost impossible barriers, we want the viewer to get as close as possible to the detainees' unique point of view. The focus of the interviews will be on detainees describing “Invisible Pictures” of the realities of life in detention. They will be asked: If you had a camera and could take five photos, what would they depict? The detainees will be active and creative participants in the project, rather than passive subjects. Their images will form the basis of the animations. Their words will transport us into their world.

BIOGRAPHY
Tim Travers Hawkins is a young London-based filmmaker.  Tim began making films whilst living in South America and trained in Buenos Aires and Cuba. He has directed films in Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Portugal, the UK and the USA. He also shoots and edits.

His work is diverse: animation, documentary, fiction, video art and installation. He is interested in working with and challenging cinematic genres, particularly the division between documentary and fiction. His films often deal with hidden forms of violence and the coercive effects of society.
He has picked up various international awards, including the Silver Dragon at the 2010 Krakow Film Festival.

The film is a collaboration between London-based filmmaker Tim Hawkins and animation artists listed below. The Global Campaign to End Child Detention supports the project by facilitating contact with children in detention facilities. All children interviewed will be closely monitored by trusted non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and social workers throughout the project to ensure safety. Identity will be hidden for the same reason.
