LIVE WIRE FOR REFUGEES: noon to noon, Saturday 31st August to Sunday 1st September 2013 at Federation Square, Melbourne, Australia. Event organised by the Refugee Action Collective Victoria.
This project is intended to significantly raise the profile of, and public attention to, the plight of asylum seekers in the lead up to the September 7 federal election, and to express our opposition to the attitudes of both major parties.
Australia's current policy direction from both major parties on refugees contravenes the United Nations convention on refugees. The convention was drafted as a response to the displacement of millions of people by World War Two and the refusal of many nations to take in Jewish refugees escaping the Holocaust. It is designed to ensure no country ever turns its back again on vulnerable groups who need to escape persecution. Australia ratified the convention in 1954. The most recent Labor Party policy change – the PNG “solution” – flies in the face of the convention, and is a worrying development in Australia’s interpretation of its responsibilities towards people seeking asylum.
This event will bring the community together in a vocal marathon of ideas with over 100 speakers from diverse community groups, high profile thinkers, musicians and ordinary Australians taking turns, coming and going, to ensure the microphone is never silent for 24 hours. In the spirit of filibusters and at a time when celebrities and ordinary Australians alike are regularly completing all kinds of feats, from running marathons to staying dry in July, this event provides the opportunity for all Australians concerned with the current refugee policy agenda to speak up for asylum seekers. We will also endeavour to have a live stream of the event on the Internet, collaborate with 3CR community radio to have it broadcast, and publicise those who will be speaking.
The Challenges
This is a community event with the aim to raise the profile of and attention to, the plight of asylum seekers. Regardless of the amount of media attention the event is given, there is no loss in uniting the community on this important human rights issue.
Security overnight in a hub of the CBD nightlife district may be the only potential issue we face. That being said, we have onsite security and police have been informed of the event.
