Baucau Peace Festival
Friday 27 May - Sunday 29 May, 2016
Purpose: To strengthen relationships and link artists and audiences through music and dance across Timor and Australia.
The Baucau Peace Festival will build on the extraordinary success of the inaugural festival in 2013 which inspired performers from Australia, Dili, Baucau and the surrounding regions, delighting and amazing audiences, many of whom were experiencing
a festival for the first time.
The 2016 Festival will showcase Timorese music and dance from local district based bands and groups and will headline internationally recognised Timorese icon Ego Lemos. International performers will also be hosted, including Boite World Music’s Melbourne Millennium Choir from Victoria, Australia.
The festival will showcase the exceptional music talents of the Timorese people as well as offering significant opportunities for local economies, tourism, community engagement and music and arts development.
Performances and activities will start with a beautiful opening ceremony Friday evening and continue until the closing concert on Sunday night. This a family friendly alcohol-free event where there will be something to delight audiences of all ages.
How The Funds Will Be Used
The total budget is $60,000 with $10,000 of this being in-kind. We have confirmed cash funding of:
- $2,500 US from the Australian Embassy, Dili;
- $10,000 Aust from a private sponsor
- $5,000 Aust from Boite World Music.
Friends of Baucau are also sponsoring the performance fees and travel costs for traditional dance groups from the 11 surrounding districts to perform at the festival.
We have submitted a request to the Timorese Government (Ministry of Art and Culture; Tourism and Trade) for $12,000 US towards the costs of production including generators. If successful this still leaves a shortfall of $15,000 cash.
The funds raised through the Pozible campaign will support artist fees of $8000 and $7000 towards the production and training shortfall. Additional funds raised will extend the benefits of the festival through documentation and enabling a payment to be made to all the Timorese volunteers who have worked so hard to realise this amazing dream.
As Project Managers, Marqy and I have volunteered for this crazy adventure as we believe passionately that the arts and festivals are significant drivers for creating, sustaining and inspiring communities. We have a proven record of delivering sustainable outcomes for the artists and the audiences we work with as well as a commitment to Timor Leste.
This is an historic event. Please join with us and help make this a reality!
