HELLO THERE, WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU is a new contemporary performance work to be presented as part of the 2014 Next Wave Festival in partnership with ACMI. Inspired by a town in New Mexico, USA, that changed its name to a television game show called Truth or Consequences in the 1950’s, this project investigates the politics of identity, tradition and community.
Set within the elusive confines of a television studio during the town’s annual Fiesta, HELLO THERE examines the quest of a small town attempting to stand out in the world. With camera angles, game show pranks and pre-recorded laughter this work examines the universal quest for significance, ways we re-invent history, construct our own stores and create rituals to believe in.
In May 2012, Louris van de Geer (writer) visited Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and partcipated in the May Fiesta. She has has built strong connections with the community and believes passionately in sharing the intriguing and complex stories that has kept this town on the map.

"Hello There, We’ve Been Waiting for You” has been commissioned and developed through Next Wave’s Kickstart program for Next Wave Festival 2014 and by St. Martin’s Youth Arts Centre. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body and by the City of Melbourne.
In the 1950's the town of Hot Springs, New Mexico changed its name to Truth or Consequences following a publicity stunt by a television network. Ralph Edwards, the host of popular radio quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. The name change was meant to last a year but to this day the town still celebrates with an annual ‘fiesta’ which includes a beauty contest, a parade and a stage show. Ralph Edwards returned to the town each year until his death to attend the Fiesta, and there is a room dedicated to him in the Geronimo Springs Museum on Main Street, Truth or Consequences.

The Challenges
It is a risk to embark on a big project like this and we want it to reach its full potential. We want this work to be of the highest quality and make a vital contribution to the Next Wave Festival and ACMI and have a life in the future.
To do this we need money to make sure we have everything we need - enough rehearsal time, high quality set construction, lighting equipment and marketing.
We are incredibly lucky to have had the support from Next Wave, ACMI and St Martins to get this work off the ground but we now need a bit more to make it happen!
