Love Cut - A Short Film
๐ The Story ๐
The morning after sleeping together for the first time, Mia and Will are forced to confront their conflicted feelings for each other when Will accidentally stabs Mia.
Love Cut is a short film that explores themes of young adulthood and relationships, and how they often, do not go together. We catch our characters, Mia and Will in the middle of a time in their lives that is full of exciting stimuli and tough choices. These two things culminate when Will accidentally stabs Mia (whoops). They are both forced to confront the giant gash in their relationship, concurrently with the knife in Mia's stomach (eek).
๐ The Cast ๐
(From left to right)
๐ HANNAH LAGUDAH plays Love Cut's lead protagonist, MIA. The only-child of two overbearing parents, Mia is a headstrong young woman who has just left home and is trying to get a handle on independent living and university. Mia responds to the uncertainty in her life with brashness. She seems confident to onlookers but is vulnerable to being hurt by the people she values.
๐ CHERYL HO plays BEC. Miaโs best friend and roommate, Bec is an empowered, expressive young woman, sure of herself morally and sexually.
๐ OWEN MCCREDIE plays WILL. Miaโs โitโs-complicated-crushโ, Will is a twenty-one-ish year old guy trying his best to be a modern man but one who, often, finds himself falling just short.

(pictured: Director Tom Tutone and Director of Photography Ashleigh Hammond)
๐ Director & Writer (Tom Tutone) Driven to create films and music videos, Tom aspires to construct a career as a writer, director, cinematographer, or all the above. His love of filmmaking emerged during primary school when he would turn any assignment possible into a video submission. It was during this same era when he began creating stop motion wrestling and Lego animations with the goal of becoming a famous Youtuber. Some of Tomโs achievements in film include working as the cinematographer on the 16mm film Phone Booth (COMING SOON), writing and directing music videos for the Melbourne musician Good Brother and completing a two-month internship at a commercial production company in Los Angeles during 2020.
๐ Producer (Rachel Chen) In 2019, Rachelโs short film which she directed, produced, and wrote, One, Two, was awarded the Encouragement Award at the VMC Film Festival, and was subsequently available to stream on SBS OnDemand. She is an emerging Australian filmmaker and producer, with a passion for inclusive storytelling.
๐ Director of Photography (Ashleigh Hammond) With a love of the very technical and manual process of working with cameras and big equipment, Ash loves being set a challenge for a shot and making an idea come to life. Ash has thoroughly enjoyed working on 16mm film in the past and enjoys the test of learning and understanding new equipment. She hopes to continue pursuing her love for cinematography throughout her career and would love to eventually become a Steadicam operator.
๐ Production Designer (Frankie Hopkins) Frankie is a deeply passionate filmmaker whose goals are to bring greater diversity, representation, imagination, and bright fun colour into the industry/world. Her favourite filmmakers are Taika Waititi and Wes Anderson, though it is illegal for a design-oriented person to dislike Wes. A self-professed โweird ladyโ, Frankie appreciates the whimsy and quirks of life and legitimately will go crazy if she sees a frog or a dog.
๐ Sound Designer (Alanna Marshall) Alanna is a Melbourne-based filmmaker and all-round nature dork. Alanna has worked on Leftovers Sketch Comedyโs Fresh Blood (2017) and The Slot (2017), Micadorโs The Simple Bits campaign (2019), as well as sound recording for Escape Velocity (2019), and editing/mixing comedian Josh Cakeโs latest YouTube season (2020). She is currently the assistant producer and editor for Melbourne podcast Illiterature.
๐ Editor (Rob Hess) Rob aspires to make a living from editing and would love to work on feature films one day, although he finds any kind of involvement in film making to be enjoyable and rewarding. As a teenager, Rob realized that the hours seemed to disappear while he buried himself in various software programs making miscellaneous videos and has known ever since that it is his passion to help bring stories to life through editing.

๐ More diversity in Australian screen content ๐
A message from the producer....
Within the current climate of COVID-19 and the Australian arts industry facing increasing financial strain, Love Cut's comedic, upbeat and optimistic story seeks to uplift audiences as we laugh at our similarity to some of the core characters.
We decided to adopt a non-traditional casting method to represent the multicultural, inclusive, Melbourne community which the cast and crew associated as being something deeply unique to the communities we find ourselves living within. To see Love Cut's lead characters be represented in a manner that feels authentic and relatable to our experiences living in a multicultural Australia feels like an important way in which the film can contribute to the library of more inclusive Aussie content for future audiences and creatives alike.
