Volition is a comedy/drama short film about Benjamin Time who is facing parenthood with his girlfriend, Rochelle Heim, with conflicting arising as their respective supernatural families become involved. A deeply personal story inspired by writer/director Carly Pettersson's own experience with dysfunctional family relationships borne from opposing beliefs, and the intense love that can overcome that conflict. We have chosen to bring this unique story to life on the silver screen and we are looking for your support to help us bring this never-before-seen film to life!

We are raising money through crowdfunding for two main reasons; to achieve our fundraising goal in order to create the complex and highly detailed design elements that make our film unique and compelling, and an invite to you, our valued supporters and audience, to become active participants in the evolution of this film and to join us on the exciting journey that is film-making.

But what's in it for you, right? All pledgers will be listed in the credits of the finished film, immortalising your name on the silver screen, but will also receive great rewards that will not be available anywhere else, including early access to the finished film, photographs signed by the cast and crew, limited edition posters and even tickets to a premiere screening at Palace Barracks Cinemas in Brisbane! Your continued support for this project will allow us to secure the vital elements needed to make this film the creatively the best we can. Every dollar pledged would greatly help to bring this film to life, so pledge now and join us on this wonderful adventure!

Meet The Team

There is a fantastic team behind this project, all of whom are dedicated to making this the best possible film we can!

Carly Pettersson is the talented writer and director behind this fantastic project. Having been interested in film since high school, Carly has worked on a wide variety of projects in a multitude of roles, including short films, TV commercials, music videos and more. She sees this film as the culmination of two years of learning at JMC Academy in Brisbane and an opportunity to push herself to achieve the best and gain a name for herself in the film industry; working as the producer on the short film "Grounded" and directing the music video "Tell Me", Carly has always wanted to make her own film from the ground up and wants this film to demonstrate that.

Jacob Dore-Porrett is a highly dedicated and focused producer, whose main passion is organising a film and putting together all the little parts into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. As the producer, Jacob is responsible for most of the behind the scenes work before the shoot that goes into making a film, as they often say a film is really made in pre-production and that is where he shines. Jacob has performed exclusively as the producer on the short film "The Little Things", as well as the award nominated TV commercial for Ancestry.com.

Luke Nicolaou has come on board with the Volition team as the Director of Photography, the role responsible for most of the visual elements you get to see in front of the camera. With a substantial body of work behind him, Luke joined Gun Metal Grey Productions early in 2014 as an editor and DoP, and has worked on a variety of short films, music videos and documentaries. Luke has worked previously with Carly on the short film "Grounded" where he worked as the Director of Photography and filmed the LMFAO parody "Organic and I Know It", and directed his own award nominated music video "Gameboy" earlier in the year.

Volition is an important film for the crew. This film marks the culmination of knowledge and experience from two years of study at JMC Academy, and we want this film to truly reflect the blood, sweat and tears we have poured into our studies and films over that time. On top of that, it's this film that will help propel us into the industry; one which many claim is dead and forgotten and we would like nothing more than to prove them wrong. Many film-makers have made their start in cinema by making exceptional short films during and after film school, including huge names like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. We are shooting for the stars with this film and we would love nothing more than to be given a chance to leave an indelible mark on this fantastic industry, but to do that, we truly need your support.

The Vision for the Film

It is imperative that the visuals act to enhance the story and characters' background. The lighting design of The Kings of Summer, the high contrast lighting in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the complimentary coloured lighting used in the TV show You're the Worst has served as inspiration for Volition.  The Kings of Summer, in particular, is the biggest inspiration for the design of the film with its similar themes and comedic plot devices. The colour, lighting, and consequent shadows, are important aspects in creating an environment that compliments the costuming and make up design as well as heightening dramatic scenes within the script itself.

The French film Amelie, has also served as a strong inspiration for the look of the location, especially the quirky vintage set pieces. The film is primarily set in Ben and Rochelle's house and the set design needs to reflect the characters' personalities and family history. The vintage decor will also reinforce the timelessness of both of the families.

How The Funds Will Be Used

2.Production:
- Catering = $500

Making films isn't cheap. We've organised free gear hire, and a talented and dedicated crew working well below industry rates who are passionate about the project, but to make a good film does require funding. Above is a breakdown of our fundraising goal where every dollar pledged will go in order to bring the film to life. The design elements - the art, props and costumes of the film - take up the biggest portion of our budget. It's important that we make the supernatural elements and the costumes look as believable and interesting as possible, so we are dedicating most of our funds into the design of the film.

There's a saying in the film industry that all crews shoot on their stomachs, so it's important that we keep everyone fed and energised to maintain the level of motivation required to shoot for five days straight. Post production is another important aspect of the film; well done visual effects and colour grading help to elevate independent films above the ordinary in order to create a truly memorable experience, but these are costly and time-consuming. Through your continued support, we can afford to go to a professional post-production company for these effects which will vastly elevate the quality we are fully capable of producing.

The Challenges

Making films is difficult, especially on such a tight budget.  We have got a spectacular response to our casting calls, and we are confident we can find the very best actors for our short film, which means we, as the film-makers, need to step up to the plate to make the very best film we can! A lot of time and effort is going into art design for the film, and that is where most of the danger lies; if it's rushed or done poorly, the costumes, props and locations will run the risk of looking cheap and fake - something we obviously don't want. To get around this, we will be focusing on doing the best production design we can, and have hired an extremely talented production designer to help us achieve our spectacular vision!

Even after shooting, we have a long road ahead of us with post-production, and we would love to have a film that we are proud to submit to festivals like Tropfest, Sundance, or even Cannes! A lot of time will be going into post-production to make sure we have the most entertaining film we can possible make, and it will be edited by the award winning Phoebe Galloway! We would like to get the visual effects and colour grade done professionally, to make sure they are of high quality and do the film justice.
