Christmas Dinner for Typhoon Kids

Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most powerful storms ever recorded. It made landfall in the Philippines on November 8, 2013, leaving a massive trail of devastation. More than 6,000 people were killed and millions were left homeless. Buildings and roads crumbled, fishing boats were wrecked, and groves of coconut trees were flattened, leaving many families unable to earn the incomes they depended on.

Welcome to Tan-auan village, Eastern Samar, the Philippines. This village of 800+ has been wiped out twice by Typhoons Amang and Ruby in 2014. The village has food insecurity and most people live on less than $1 a day. This Christmas we want to buy these people a simple community meal. We want you to join us. So this Christmas you should give each other a donation to these poor and often forgotten children and their families. Please give what you can and also recommend to your friends and family. If this works we will help them grow more food in the next project. Thank you and I do mean thank you.

In 2013 and 2014 I was working in Manila. I traveled to Mindanao over my break and witnessed first hand the suffering that so many endure. I wanted to make a difference.I wanted to change things. I also became aware that many charities waste up to 2/3 of their donations on administration and non direct expenses.
Every dollar you donate will go to these people and a statement of accounts and receipts will be published online.

Every dollar raised will provide a meal in a Community Christmas Dinner. Some people are poorer than others but if you think that living on $1.50 a day is much better than living on a $1 a day then you are mistaken. Equality builds community.

Frequantly asked questions.

Why don't you do the irrigation project first?

I wanted to see if this works as it's 10% to 15% of the size of the irrigation project. It would demonstrate to the subsistence farmers that crowdfunding works so we would be able to obtain commitments of labor.

Why don't you use tofu or soya?
The people want meat for their children. This is a third world country and animal welfare doesn't get high priority when people are starving.

What if I don't have and money?
I understand. . You are one of the majority but you can refer this to all your friends on Facebook, email and word of mouth. This may actually achieve more!

Your still not skinny Mark? Why don't they eat you instead?
I'm losing weight living in this village. But yes, It's been suggested that roasting me might be an option. Joke.

How The Funds Will Be Used

To feed the village,\s 800 people a simple meal of rice, a vegetable dish and a chicken and vegetable dish at 40 pesos a person (AU$1,25'or US$85 cents) is 32,000 pesos. So our target is 32,000 Pesos (AU$1000 US$680). If we raise more money we will buy a toy for each child and extra food for the malnourished.

If this succeeds I will undertake a an irrigation project. Each of the fifty subsistence farmers will provide two or three days labour and the only employed person will be the carpenter/project manager. The cost of the project is estimated at 250,000 pesos to 350,000 pesos.

The Challenges

The only obstacle is that people waste money on a gift that someone doesn't need rather than feed a very hungry family.
