As Queensland Leatherboy I will be representing my club BootCo. in the International Mr Bootblack Competition held in Chicago this May. Representing BootCo. has been an amazing opportunity. My title has, and continues to be a vehicle of exploration and learning for me, whilst my club provides me with an environment in which I am able to grow and learn, whilst fostering community connections and nurturing life-long friendships.
In 2010 I was diagnosed with HAND or HIV Associated Neurological Disease, or in layman's term; dementia. However due to a worsening of my medical conditions in recent times i am unable to travel without a full-time Carer. Whilst my airline ticket and entry to the IMBB Competition have been paid for by my club, the unexpected costs associated with the need to have a carer accompany me now jeopardises my capacity to travel to the competition.
Bootblacking takes me to a space that is so quiet, that at times the leather overwhelms me as it speaks to me and shares with me its story. Whilst the path I now traverse on my journey, as a bootblack is new, in many respects, it is also a path well trodden.

How The Funds Will Be Used
To purchase my carer's entry into the IML competition costing $220.00 and the cost of a return airline ticket to Chicago and entry into the IML competition. This price fluctuates depending on the time of booking but our estimate is $1,200.00.
The Challenges
The major obstacle to this project is the fact that I need a carer to travel with me and the additional financial impediment this creates. Without a carer it would make traveling and competing extremely difficult.
