Punjab to Perth

AN INTERACTIVE DIGITAL DOCUMENTARY EPUBLISHED FOR THE IPAD
Bollywood meets Meat Pie as the annual Sikh festival of Vaisakhi kicks off in April 2013 in Bayswater, Perth. A celebration of Sikh faith, it’s a rich cultural experience of food, music and faith. "Punjab to Perth” is a journey into what it is to be different. With beards and turbans, saris and Punjabi suits, Sikh’s in Australia maintain identity and strive to become a part of Australian society. With open and revealing access, we follow the build up to festival through to the celebration and meet the people.
We are delivering a mixed media and video documentary eBook for the iPad. The book uses dynamic updates of social media from the Sikh community around the world.
POZIBLE 3-1 CROWD FUNDING
This project is a part of the ScreenWest 3-1 project funding stream. If the project is successful in raising its budget through Pozible before the ScreenWest funding is exhausted, then the project will be further funded $3 for every $1 raised.
HOW IS IT BEING DELIVERED?
"Punjab to Perth" will be delivered as a digital documentary over the iPad with social media.
The project uses the iPad with the iBook as the content container.
The eBook format allows for text to collide with video, still pictures, audio, touch interactives and custom programming to make a ‘living book’: the iBook interaction with the reader provides a rich palette of cross platform moments.
WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT THE PROJECT?
Many Sikh’s experience abuse and racism as the beards and turbans are associated with the Taliban by ignorant people.
To be born and bred Australian yet experience abuse and even violence is shattering.
Vaisakhi is a chance to celebrate being Sikh and to allow non-Sikh’s a way to understand.
Vaiskahi is a day to heal.
"Punjab to Perth" is a project that explores the lives of Sikh’s living in Western Australia as
they maintain their identity and are as Australian as a BBQ. It follows countdown to the festival as homes across Perth madly bake, cook, paint and prepare for the event.
Meet the people, hear the music, see the colour and engage. The digital story of the 2013
festival is a fascinating and personal journey walking with surprising and charismatic West
Australians. The "Punjab to Perth" digital project finds out what it means to be different.
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
The money raised will go towards all production costs for the film production and making of the eBook.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON'T REACH OUR TARGET GOAL?
Then all the money gets refunded so it really is all or nothing!
If we reach our goal and ScreenWest chooses to fund us we will make:
- A 60 plus page book covering the lives of the Sikh people and the 2013 festival of Vaisakhi
- Social media platforms on Facebook with Instagram, Twitter and YouTube channels
- 5 x 7 minute minimum films following the festivals progress and ultimate climax
- Multiple clips of the interviews with a variety of people within the community.
- Community instagrams, tweets and facebook social media that will be updated as the festival evolves. The book takes a live feed from social media portals.
- Street stops with the discovering what people generally know about Sikh culture (such as music) as video clips
- Texts in book form covering the planning of the festival as it evolves as a diary of events
- Culture notes and other design poetry that will add value to the book as texts, pictures and interactives.
If we achieve our Pozible target but the ScreenWest funding is exhausted we will be delivering an eBook with:
- A 20 plus page book covering the lives of the Sikh people and the 2013 festival of Vaisakhi

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE EXCEED OUR GOAL?
If we exceed our goal by a substantial amount then there is potential to travel to Amritsar in India to visit the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple is the holiest shrine for Sikh's in the world and filming will be taking place to summon up the spirit of the surroundings and the pilgrims to the temple. The footage, interviews, pictures and rich media that is added to the eBook will enable us to create an entirely new chapter that will allow readers a very detailed insight into what it means to be Sikh.
The comfort of knowing that you helped us realise our project!
