SPOKE! Word Festival
Running for five days as part of Adelaide’s Fringe Festival 2012 from 13-17 March (straight after Writers’ Week) at the 'Shimmering West' Fringe venue in Light Square, “SPOKE! Word Festival” is all about sustaining today’s alternative word power to fuel the future!
Organised by a community of 'non mainstream'/fringe-dwelling writers affiliated with the Adelaide College of the Arts Professional Writing program in an industry partnership with the SA Writers Centre, “SPOKE!” wants to give away some treasure in 2012 to swashbuckling stage-smiths to the tune of $1250 divided equally between two different events: the Poetry Improv $lam and FlashTheatreForward.
That’s where you come in – the lovers of words and performers’ derring-do! For as little as a tenner you will be creating a crucible to harness the explosive power of up to 50 live performance mind blowers over 3 hours!
So check out the event blurbs below so you know where your treasure’s being shared and what you shall reap in return!
And in the meantime you can get updates on the adventures of SPOKE!n word swash-bucklers on twitter and Facebook as well as through our own online daily paper! They are spaces where you can also engage with us too!

SPOKE! IT: Be the word, spread the word!
POETRY IMPROV $LAM !
No paper, no time for practice, “SPOKE!” throws down the gauntlet for the fast-shooters of the poetry / rap / performing / acting / slam scenes.
Living life on the edge of words and performance, Adelaide Fringe’s impoverished daredevils will compete for a total prize pool of $750 ($500, $200 & $50 for 1st, 2nd & 3rd respectively).
They’ll be taken on a twisted journey through strange time zones where one minute can seem like an eternity, as they’re forced to think on their feet and slam out magnificent musings on random one word offerings from the audience.
Big in the UK and the USA – first seen in Australia as part of “SPOKE!” last year! Our dream is for this to become a mainstay of the national spoken word events annual program and an annual competition feted by its peers for its hard won standards and visceral excitement.
FLASH THEATRE FORWARD!
“SPOKE!” aims to create its own theatrical CERN (or 'big bang simulator') - an ‘underground’ lab to test theatrical hypotheses, cause performing particles to collide and capture the results of potentially new theatrical forms through disCERNing a project!
Specialist practitioners in the fields of flashmobs, devised theatre, gaming & public/site installation performance will challenge and trigger teams of workshop participants to create a paradigm-shifting theatre concept to pitch to the panel of ‘ground breakers’ for the chance to win $500 ‘spark’ funding!
Our dream is for the ‘theatrical CERN’ to find a ‘home’ under the ground of established theatre practice in Adelaide and regularly support the potential of creating new forms of theatre and their evolution.
