What is 'The Summit'?
The Summit is an Australian feature film produced in Queensland. It was shot on a shoestring budget by volunteer cast and crew. It is currently in post production, with editing almost complete. But there is a lot more work to be done.
What is 'The Summit' about?
Kelvin Hardy is an urban planner, and he struggles every day to keep the city from descending into chaos. He understands the problems the world is facing. That's why he has been chosen.
Kelvin and seven other 'candidates' are invited to a house in the country for a weekend.
Their challenge, they are told, is to prove themselves worthy of attending a prestigious world summit, sponsored by an eccentric billionaire, Malcolm Hunt, that will address the world's most pressing issues.
But on their first morning they discover they are trapped inside the house, with no means of communicating with the outside world. Malcolm Hunt's 'solution' is to bring about the apocalypse - and candidates' real challenge is to survive...
Insightful, dark and twisted, 'The Summit' is about the best and worst of humanity - a film you won't easily forget.
Who is in 'The Summit'?
The Summit was written, produced and directed by Mike Holligan, who has made a number of short films over the years. Mike is also the visual effects supervisor. You can see some of Mike's work here and also on his YouTube channel (<--links are in bold)
The Summit stars Daniel Green as the main character, Kelvin Hardy. Daniel is a strong actor who has been in many short films over the years. You can see some of Dan's work here.
The Summit also stars Rae Johnston, who many people know as one of the presenters for channel One's video game show Save Point. You can see some of Rae's work at her website raejohnston.net at the Save Point website savepoint.net.au or in her new show Geek Bomb!
The Summit also stars up-and-coming Queensland actors Caroline Levien, Robin Darch, Samantha Jane Faircloth, Loretta Kung, Ross Medew and Timothy Quinlan, and Leigh Walker as the eccentric billionaire Malcolm Hunt. Leigh has been a director and actor in Queensland's Harvest Rain Theatre Company.
What else needs to be done?
The Summit is about 65% percent finished. Although it has been shot and edited, there still remains an enormous amount of work to be done in visual effects and sound design.
To complete The Summit, we need to design, build and animate a future Brisbane city, as well as insert objects like futuristic cars, weapons and technology (the trailer gives a glimpse of this). It's exciting work, and the end result will be amazing, but it takes time - an estimated 1665 hours for visual effects, plus sound design.
Some of the things we need to create include:
- a new Brisbane city skyline, about 30-40 years in the future
- a 'hyperway' tunnel with futuristic cars and full of advertising (previs animation above)
- the 'control room' where Malcolm Hunt's team of 'analysts' monitor the candidates
- various futuristic objects and computer interfaces to be inserted into footage, including a TV screen, a futuristic barbecue & futuristic fireplace! (it all makes sense in the movie)
We need your help!
To get 'The Summit' over the finish line and onto screens, we need some financial support for visual effects and also sound design and mixing. The money will go towards purchasing pre-made or custom-built 3D models (we use turbosquid.com for this), as well as important things like food and supplies to keep our poor VFX artists alive while they work on the project. With 1665 hours needed to complete the work, Mike Holligan and the other CGI geeks/grunts will have to take some time out of their day jobs to give their full attention to the film and do more quality work (for a little over $7 an hour - it's all about the passion!). So basically your money = a better film, sooner. Any left over funds (or excess funds, if we surpass our goal) will go towards sound design and mixing.
Not only that - supporting this film could also make you famous! We have an enormous amount of creative freedom to design our future world, which means, for the right price, you could be part of it!

What is the future for 'The Summit'?
Our aim will be to enlist the help of a sales agent to secure distribution channels for the film, whether it be DVD and Blu-Ray, online streaming, cable TV and maybe even a run at the cinemas. We will also submit the film to festivals around the world.
