ABOUT THE FILM

Filmmaker Scott Lewis began filming Marco Luccio in 2012 on Phillip Island, where rugged volcanic formations echo the rising skyline of Manhattan, foreshadowing a visual through-line from Australian landscapes to New York skyscrapers. In 2017, he traveled to New York with Marco, capturing him working in situ amid the raw, electric energy of the city. Manhattan’s primal pulse ignited a distinctive creative force, vividly brought to life on screen by Luccio and Lewis.

While the documentary has a major focus on Marco in New York, it also chronicles over twenty years of Marco at work, etching, sketching, painting massive canvases, crafting prints, postcards, books, and street posters. From exhibition openings to his reflections and philosophies, it captures the energy, ideas, and relentless creativity that drive his art.

The film also traces Marco’s evolution from Benevento, near Naples, arriving in Australia at age five, to becoming one of the country’s most recognised artists. Known for his generosity and commitment to teaching, he has inspired countless emerging artists through drawing, painting, printmaking, and ten years of his acclaimed “Sketching in the Gallery” sessions at the National Gallery of Victoria. This documentary not only entertains but also educates and inspires, revealing the artistic process and the perseverance behind a lifetime of creation.
