Extreme violence on a casual night out has now become the norm in Australia. A fatal king hit a weekly headline.
Written and to be directed by Nadia Townsend.
Brawl is a short film which puts you in the shoes of a broken young man “Soups” who is so scared of his own vulnerability he douses himself in alcohol and tries to assert his manhood at the risk of all those around him.
The story follows a group of men through a night of heavy drinking and misguided attempts to connect with each other, as the night and the drink wears on the situation becomes dangerously recognisable.
We have managed to assemble an incredibly talented cast and crew, amongst some of the most skilled in the industry, all generously donating their time and expertise to this project, foregoing wages and working on a volunteer basis so that this story can be told.
We have recently gained the support of companies like Quail Tv (creators of At Home With Julia and Wednesday Night Fever) and Australian legend Paul Kelly who’s music will nostalgically permeate the most intimate moments of the film.
Brawl is already partially funded by Nadia, actress Rose Byrne and Simon Townsend.
We need your help to complete this project by raising an additional $5,500. These funds will go towards some of the production but mainly completion of the project, post production and distribution.
We head into a week long rehearsal this Sunday the 14th July and will be shooting July 21-23.
As a backer or just a follower of our journey you will see regular updates of our project. Photos, stories and short videos.
We are all very excited about Brawl and hope you can be part of the project.
How Brawl came about...
- from writer/director Nadia Townsend
I met the stunt performers of Brawl last year in Namibia where we had all relocated for the filming of Mad Max 4 – Fury Road.
Working on the film as Assistant Dramaturg, my job was to run a program where by these men of idyllic Australia were essentially transformed into ‘child soldiers’ or ‘war boys’. We were attempting to locate on a primal level the most powerful ignition for violence.
Brawl is a continuation of that work.
We had the great privilege of political activist Eve Ensler joining us during the our rehearsal time in Namibia. She spoke to the gentlemen about her theories on male violence and its perpetuation, a major cause being the patriarchal system that continues to destroy the gentility of men and teach generation after generation that domination is the only form of survival and that vulnerability is weak and should be feared therefore shut down.
Eve's words still resonate with me and has highlighted the notion of vulnerability in men a catalyst for destruction or a turning point for evolution.
