ENGLAND by Tim Crouch
“A creative team, full of exuberance, dedication, innovation and inclusivity” - Metro Arts
We are Nathan Booth and Matt Seery; theatre-makers and producers from Brisbane bringing acclaimed contemporary theatre work ENGLAND by Tim Crouch to Queensland for the very first time.
ENGLAND is a site-specific theatre work for art galleries, written by multi-award winning contemporary playwright Tim Crouch (My Arm, An Oak Tree, Adler & Gibb). Driven by entwining narratives of corporeal and metaphysical transplantations, the work dismantles and re-arranges traditional relationships between character, actor and audience, relentlessly questioning the ways in which we value art, culture and human life.
ENGLAND by Tim Crouch is a part of Metro Arts’ LCL Program, a platform for local artists to present contemporary theatre and we are excited to share this unique and captivating performance experience with Brisbane audiences in 2017. Since the season’s announcement, director Matt Seery has discussed the importance of ENGLAND’s upcoming Queensland premiere.
“As producers, Nathan and I are extremely excited to share this production with our local community. Not only is it the first Australian production of the work in almost a decade (since Melbourne Festival 2008) but the very first time that permissions have been granted to an independent production team in Australia. As an early career director, the opportunity to direct one of Tim Crouch’s works (which I have admired for years) is something of a dream come true. ENGLAND takes a wildly playful approach to modern theatre; formally innovative, intriguing, chilling and, best of all, a provocation of many difficult conversations we need to be having about the world today.”
The production will be brought to life by highly experienced and acclaimed Queensland artists, in collaboration with some of the most fiercely talented young creatives.

Praise for ENGLAND by Tim Crouch:
“...created with rigorous, poetic economy... ENGLAND belongs to that wonderful genre of thoughtful plays that could be discussed for hours without exhausting its ideas” (The New York Times, 2009)
“like all of Crouch’s shows, it burns with the desire to provoke as it explores not just the nature of theatre but the way we live now, in a world where commerce knows no borders” (The Guardian, 2007)
How The Funds Will Be Used
As producers, we have decided to accept the additional challenge of offering an upfront fee to all artists involved in the production, rather than relying on a profit-share arrangement. We ourselves have experienced the stress and uncertainty that these arrangements can introduce, and we’re determined to do as best we can by our artists.
As ever, the costs associated with producing independent theatre work are diverse and demanding. There are boring administration costs; including insurance and licensing fees, ticketing fees, and staff costs. There are production expenses; for performance and rehearsal venues, technical equipment, set, props and costume. There are marketing costs to help us spread the word; photography, video, publicity and sponsored social media.
Fortunately, this project will receive financial support from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Combined with co-presentation support from Metro Arts, therefore our budget is almost complete. There is just a small gap of $2000 which needs to be sourced in order to bring ENGLAND by Tim Crouch to Brisbane. Enter, this Pozible campaign!
The Challenges
We hate when supporters are asked to double down on their investment in independent art: first with an online donation and then again at the box office. So instead, we are using Pozible as an opportunity to offer our audience a chance to book exclusive VIP Opening Night tickets and offer supporters the chance to come behind the scenes and join us for an open studio rehearsal. We close our budget gap upfront, and our audience can get even closer to this Queensland premiere season of ENGLAND by Tim Crouch…win win!
So, if you’re excited to see a brand new, independent Australian production of acclaimed theatre work ENGLAND by Tim Crouch, eager to support an explosive creative team of experienced and emerging local artists, or all of the above - book your tickets through Pozible now!
Thanks so much for your support. We can’t wait to see you at ENGLAND soon!
