The Ngoc Tram Nguyen Scholarship
The Ngoc Tram Nguyen Scholarship will provide opportunities for young people from south west Sydney to study law at UNSW.
The scholarship is worth $25 000 over five years, and is for an exceptional student from a non-selective, public school in Sydney's south west, who has suffered financial hardship or socio-economic disadvantage.
We want to inspire the next generation of school leavers to aim high for their futures, careers and impacts.
This scholarship will assist young people get through the door of university and help alleviate the financial burden of study.
We are a group of alumni and current students of UNSW Law School -- we've stepped in to help raise the funds. We want to raise $50 000 by 5 December for this incredible initiative.
Each scholarship, granted in perpetuity, requires funds of $125 000. The Faculty needs $30 000 in order to offer a second scholarship in 2014, but also needs help to make a dent in the next $125 000 required to offer a third scholarship in 2015.
Join the movement! Let’s open doors for some of Sydney’s most disadvantaged young people to come to university and fulfill their dreams.
Thank you for your support!
Who was Ngoc Tram Nguyen?
Ngoc Tram Nguyen came to Australia as an infant refugee. She met Professor Lisa Maher and Professor David Dixon (now the Dean of UNSW Law School), when they were researching the impact of policing in Cabramatta. Despite her disadvantaged background and limited formal education Tram’s outstanding intellect and drive soon became invaluable to the team.
Tram was taken on board as a research assistant and co-authored the report Anh Hai: Young Asian Background People’s Perceptions and Experiences of Policing.
Encouraged by her team, Tram enrolled into UNSW’s University Preparation Program and started to think big about her own potential and the impact she could make on her own community. In a tragic accident, however, Tram died in 2004 before she could fulfil her dream.
This scholarship is a dedication to Tram's drive, ambition and potential.
