Who is this project for?Autism prevalence rates in Australia are growing. When a child is diagnosed with autism, their parents are faced with the massive task of finding appropriate treatment. Many choose to search the internet, and come across thousands of websites, many of which contain information on interventions that are questionable, ineffective and sometimes harmful.
Who are you?
I am an Occupational Therapist and doctoral candidate studying at The University of Queensland. My PhD project has focussed on helping parents to make decisions for their child when newly diagnosed with autism, that are well-informed and based on research evidence.
What is the project?
I am developing a website for parents that features an interactive questionnaire. When answered, parents will be provided with a list of 'best fit' intervention options. The interventions they are presented with will be evidence-based, available in Australia, and relevant to their child's needs. The website is like no other available, and aims to ease the confusion and frustration for parents who are dealing with a diagnosis of autism for their child.
Why do you need funding?
Funding is required to pay for a web developer and programmer. The questionnaire component is particularly complicated as it relies on a very specific algorithm, which weights the various interventions against a number of criteria. There is no plug-in or software available for the task, and therefore needs to be customised. Without this funding, the website cannot be completed, and 3 years of hard work will be in vain!
What will you do with this website if successfully funded?
Once completed, the website will be trialled and the results published as part of my thesis. The website will then be made available to the broader Australian community, to help families everywhere to make better-informed treatment decisions for their child when confronted with an autism diagnosis.
This website WILL benefit many Australians and make the journey post-diagnosis that little bit easier.
