YAAMA ALL!! We are about to undertake the biggest creative project of our lives and we need your support!!

OVERVIEW
Amala Groom and Nicole Monks work independently as multi- disciplinary arts practioners. 'White Noise' is our first collaborative project. As early career artists we are interested in inserting Aboriginal voices and perspectives into mainstream discourses of art through experimental, interactive and performative approaches. We've been given the opportunity to do this at the 2015 Underbelly Arts Festival, and we need your support to help make it happen!

PLUS!
Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia's MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $4000. So, if you support us with $5, we get to put $10 towards this work. Give us $50 and it becomes $100!

WHAT IS WHITE NOISE?
‘White Noise’ explores the Aboriginal experience of existing in a postcolonial landscape. We as two Aboriginal women live within Western social and law structures on our own land where we are continually adopting Western thought patterns to survive. It symbolises a cultural and political portal between two worlds, exploring the intersection of Aboriginal and colonial worldviews. Using the aural and the sensory to create a transformative experience, the audience will move from the contemporary world of Cockatoo Island, through the dogleg tunnel and into the imagined and real sounds and colours of pre-colonial Cockatoo Island.

However in a wider context ‘White Noise’ represents the separation that exists across humanity; externally from nature and internally from the self in contemporary society. We believe it is important to remember, understand and engage with discourse regarding our current social structures so these structures can be questioned.

WHY?
We are passionate about transforming space; developing site-specific works which both enhance and disrupt every day movement through public spaces as well as pushing the existing boundaries of our current practice by experimenting with a diverse range of media.

After developing our individual practices alongside each other over several years, ‘White Noise’ will afford us a unique opportunity to collaborate & cultivate a fruitful creative partnership which we will continue to explore into the future.

‘White Noise’ is a project that we are deeply committed to developing & executing. The work’s concept is strong & perfectly suited for the presentation opportunity. With the support of Underbelly Arts we have a unique & unparalleled push to expand our practice, our professional networks & our technical & creative experience.

This is a vital opportunity for us to create a strong, powerful work that will connect with a mainstream audience of approximately 10000 people.

About Us

Amala Groom is a conceptual artist whose practice is informed by Indigenous methodologies and whose work, as a form of passionate activism, reads as a social and political commentary on contemporary politics and race relations. Articulated across diverse media, Groom’s work often subverts and unsettles western iconography in order to enunciate Aboriginal stories, experiences and histories, and to interrogate and undermine the legacy of colonialism. Groom began creating work in 2012 and has since contributed to numerous group shows, including the 2013 and 2014 Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize, where her works were highly commended. Groom’s first solo exhibition, The Cider Series, took place at Kings Cross Library in 2014. Recent shows include; Lawful & Permissible: Amala Groom & Blak Douglas (aka Adam Hill) at Damien Minton Gallery, Djon Mundine’s Bungaree’s Farm at Mosman Art Gallery, (in)visible: the First Peoples and War at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery and Mass Group Incident: Tell Me My Truth at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. Groom is currently studying Fine Arts at UNSW Art & Design.

Nicole Monks is Sydney based trans-disciplinary creative of Aboriginal, Dutch and English Heritage. Monks works across multiple industries including art, interior/fashion & surface design. In 2012 Monks was the winner of Accelerate, an Aboriginal creative leadership program and held her first international exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. In 2014 Monks won the UNSW Art & Design Residency and her work was Highly Commended at the Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize. In 2014 Monks was also the winner of the Fisher Ghost Photography award and winner of a Sydney Design Award for her showcase at Australian Indigenous Fashion Week.
Monks practice questions our place in this time and space by focusing on the learned behaviour/thoughts we attach to the surrounding environment, in particular the differences between Western culture and Aboriginal culture as she explore her own cross cultural heritage being Aboriginal, Dutch and English.

Underbelly Arts

Underbelly Arts supports Australia's next great artists. Through providing unique and unparalleled opportunities to bold new artistic voices, Underbelly Arts facilitates risk taking and exceptional artistic endeavour.

In 2015 Underbelly Arts is once again taking over Cockatoo Island and giving artists the chance to create and respond to one of Australia’s most magnificent settings. These works will then be showcased as part of the Underbelly Arts Festival, a two-day celebration of process, new ideas and the best emerging and experimental artists across Australia.

The Underbelly Arts Festival will take place on August 1 - 2

Matched Funds

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar provided we reach our campaign target of $4000.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Your financial support will enable us to fully realise our project. The money we raise in this campaign will be spent on production to make the Dogleg tunnel a fully immersive experience, helping to translate that experience of living between two cultural and political worlds and to build an artwork that explores the intersection between Aboriginal and colonial worldviews. Your generous support will enable us to secure essential AV equipment, lighting and more to bring this project to life.

We're lucky to have costs of freight, installation, venue, mentoring, creative support and technical assistance covered by Underbelly Arts - we just need you to help us meet the costs of presenting the work at the Festival.

The Challenges

In the realisation of White Noise, we anticipate that  we will face numerous challenges.

These include: potential technical obstacles in producing a fully immersive experience for our audience, occupational health and safety and fundraising is our biggest challenge!

BUT WITH YOUR HELP WE WILL HAVE THE RESOURCES WE NEED TO KICK WHITE NOISE OUT OF THE PARK!!

We currently have the support of 'Creative Partnerships' to match crowd funding, which means your support is felt twice as much.
