HEY, LISTEN!

Our project aims to bring a new experience to the small screen, packed with creativity from all heads of department from Cinematography to Art Direction; Sound Production to Editing and of course, Directing. This is our last year at University and we wanna go out with a bang, and no, we’re not exploding. We’re hoping crowdfunding is the way to reach out to the shadows and get your assistance that will help the next generation of filmmakers make their unique ideas come to life! Monsters is quite an ambitious project with a budget bigger than all of our wallets combined! The plan involves a lot of people which means we have to pay for locations, transport, food and we can’t forget costumes! You don’t want our characters to be HORRIFIC, do you?! (If you do, donate anyway, we’ll try work something out.)

Synopsis

Monsters is a coming of age musical about Wendy, a 12 year old girl who is cast in a local original musical. There she meets her fellow cast members: Ben Fish - the director who plays her fairy godfather, Roxanne - a promiscuous vampire and Kurt - a brainless zombie. As she rehearses, her perception of reality blurs with the musical itself, she confuses her internal monsters with the monsters on stage.

Director/Writer's Say

The original inspiration to write and make this film came from the short story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" by J.D Salinger. The story utilized a fantastical creature to represent the protagonist's frame of mind, mainly his concern with his loss of innocence. What I was attracted to was the idea of masking a common reality people face with something ridiculous and fantastic. One of my lecturers once told me that if I should write a story, I should write about something I know. In my so far quite limited lifespan, the only thing exciting that is probably worth telling is that I grew up within the television and theatre industry, which turned out to be a very strange, intimidating and fantastic experience, so I thought, why not write a story about that? Not only was being on stage or set something out of a dream (or nightmare) but I could use it to mask the common reality of becoming an adult. Sure, many people may not have had a childhood even remotely close to mine but if I focused the story more upon the nature of growing up rather than the situation, I could hope to reach a wider audience.

Rewards

How The Funds Will Be Used

$1000 - Private Screening: Come see it on the silver screen!

$1500 - Film production: This will help cover the cost on costumes, production design and make-up, after what was just needed, we're aren't able to cover other aspects of our entire production. Making things looking pretty isn't cheap unfortunately including getting the film out to the audience, you! So we're counting on your behalf getting us through tough times.

$500 - Rewards: The reason why we didn't focus on the rewards is because giving what the people the film they paid to get, not getting a little showbag although that may be nice if you really like it! Hence this crowdfunding project. Obviously the bigger the support the better what the film will be and little trinklets if need be.

The Challenges

We've just barely overcame our major obstacle of failing our first project, but we've come back to face our demons and slay it preventing our successes!

What Monsters risk is being too unique with our aesthetic, pushing the audience away and we really want people to appreciate the other things like ours  in particular of what young Australian filmmakers can make. General feedback from our peers and lecuterers have been good, but what we're seeking is your opinion and your support in this great journey into producing this highly ambitious short film. We will do a private screening and invite the supporters to join us to have a good time to crictically criticise the film, so we can make one final change before sending it off to festivals internationally and domestically.

Time management is a huge factor that we knew that will ultimately effects everything. Getting the music ready, actors ready, gear and crew ready. It's certainly simplistic and complicated at the same time, but with great teamwork, I believe we can overcome this. Furthermore, the supporters could be asked to contribute to the film if we're come to a stump whether it be titles, shots or colour.

We want to include the community as much as possible to overcome the obstacles together.
