A Volumetric Display is a type of 3D display that creates a visual representation of an object or scene in three physical dimensions. This is different from most current 3D display technologies that use special glasses to trick the eye into perceiving a two dimensional image in three dimensions. A Volumetric Display does not require special glasses to be worn and can be viewed from any angle.
Journey
It has been an epic journey of discovery, tinkering, brain imploding discussions and, well, fun. We would like to use this opportunity to invite you all to join us in the final stages of our journey by taking an active part in our little corner of the world. We are launching an Open Source community and hope to gather together anyone and everyone who is excited by this awesome new technology. If you have any skills that you think might help us, then please get in contact with us (sheer enthusiasm is a skill).
Goals
Our main goal for this Pozible campaign is to get the HoloDome out of our sheds and into other people's sheds, living rooms, schools, your local pub or wherever. We plan to tackle this on two fronts:
- helping you either make or buy a display so you can mezmerise your friends with cool 3D apparitions and volumetric awesomeness.
- helping anyone and everyone who wants to create their own 3D content learn how to do it. If you have a vision of what you want to display, then we'll help you make it a reality.
For this to happen we need our open source community to flourish. We currently have a website at OpenVolumetric.org where the fundamental concepts are explained. Please take a moment to have a look at it, make some comments or ask some questions. We plan to launch a Wiki containing information on some of the more technical aspects of Volumetric Displays for makers and content creators. We will also launch a Forum for collaboration about all things volumetric. A key part of the Forum will be dedicated to teaching people how to create volumetric content, which isn't as difficult as it may seem. We will also create a repository for Open Source volumetric content. Finally, all of our source code will be freely available for all the coders amongst us to play with, and hopefully contribute to.
Campaign
We’ve set the goal of this Pozible campaign at $24000, which we believe to be the minimum amount necessary to develop the hardware, deliver the rewards and launch the Open Source community. If it goes beyond that and we make some money from it, then that’d be a bonus.
We want you to feel that you are part of this project, so we will be providing regular updates via email for our contributors and via our HoloDome Blog (coming soon) for everyone else.
During the course of the campaign, if you think of anything you would like us to render in our prototype then let us know. We'll give it a crack and post it on YouTube. Supporters will get first priority, but we’ll try and give all suggestions a go.
By backing us you are not just buying in on a cool project. You are helping to create an Open Source community that will be a resource for everyone who is interested in this exciting new technology. If you are unable to contribute financially, then help us by spreading the word in any way you can. You can start by visiting our Facebook page, liking it and leaving a comment. Talk to people, Tweet, Blog about us. It all helps. If you can think of anyone you know who might have a commercial application for the HoloDome, then let them know about us.
This has been an obsession of ours for years now and we would like to thank you all for your support.
- Gav and Will.
Our sincere thanks and a guaranteed warm fuzzy feeling in your tummy.
Our sincere thanks, and a slightly warmer fuzzy feeling in your tummy. We will also list your name on our website as a founding contributer (if you want us to).
The same warm fuzzy feeling in your tummy, which you can enhance with a stylish black t-shirt sporting the Open Volumetric logo. We'll get in contact with you about sizes.
Join Gav and Will in their sheds to be among the first in the world to witness the mesmerising awesomeness of their prototype before it is released into the world. This event will take place soon after we reach our funding goal.
