What's it all about?

Part-cookbook, part-storybook,This Tractor Life provides an insight into life on an organic vineyard. It is also tribute to those who love to travel and those who love to eat, and especially those who've done both with us here at Oranje Tractor Farm, a small, family winery on the pristine south coast of Western Australia. Most of these 'travel-eaters' have shared part of their lives and their heritage with us, under the Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF) host scheme and hail from all corners of the globe - from America to Spain, Berlin to Tokyo, Anaheim to Peripignan and further. Together, we have enjoyed an incredible culinary adventure, and it is only right that it now be documented, so that you and others can enjoy it too!tractor

The plan is to transform the vast collection of fabulous, family-style recipes, gastronomical tidbits and stories shared with us by our former WWOOFers (plus some our own favorites shared in return) over the past 10 years, into a full colour book to share with the world at large. The book will highlight the amazing fresh produce grown in this great region, but don't worry, most of the ingredients should be easily available at your local market. Whether you're a traveller by nature, or just in a virtual sense, you are sure to enjoy a delectable collection of tried and true recipes from many different cultures. Who knows, it might just inspire you to travel (again)! It should certainly inspire you to cook. This Tractor Life will be: 150+ pages of gorgeous recipes and gastronomic tales from sharing meals at Oranje Tractor Farm 50+ full color photos of key recipes Full of easy to follow descriptions and details on how to prepare delicious meals Perfect for your cookbook collection as a source of inspiration and enjoyment Great as a gift to friends, family and colleagues Is it for you?

If you love exploring the world through food, then, Yes. If you want to add tried and tested easy recipes to your repertoire, then Yes. If you've ever WWOOFed and want to relive it vicariously, then Yes ....supporting the production of This Tractor Life is perfect for you.
For over 10 years, we have been hosting travellers in our home & organic winery. Most have come from afar, because, let's face it Australia is far from everywhere else. We have enjoyed the company of more than 350 people from almost every corner of the western world (and a fair proportion of the eastern as well) sharing our culture and our food.

Funding will be necessary to support the preparation, production and promotion of the book. This will involve photography, graphic design, printing and marketing. See the budget below.

Here's just one example of a recipe introduction and cultural/gastronomical notes:
Zweiblekuchen and Federweisser...a German Wine Vintage Custom
The rich, savoury German specialty, a little like pizza, but finished with sour cream and speck (similar to bacon) known as Zweibelkuchen is directly translated as Onion-Cake. It is served with Federweisser ("Feather white" is the literal translation, referring to the opaque character of new wine) ...essentially, freshly fermenting Riesling grape juice - not quite alcohol-free, but with plenty of grape sugar still present and a pleasantly zinginess on the tongue due to the yeast action, and the resulting bubbles. In the wine regions of Germany, these are the gastronomic icons during the wine harvest season, with the Federweisser even sold in supermarkets - with holes punched in the bottle tops so they don't explode due to the production of more bubbles as the fermentation continues. Two lovely young German girls, Lene and Mona, from Stuttgart, first introduced us to this tradition in 2001. Since then, we've experienced it first hand in the Mosel region of Germany, and also in Austria and even Switzerland - although each country has its own name for the fun, fizzy brew.

The book will also contain some of the findings from my thesis for the Gastronomy Diploma from the University of Champagne-Ardenne (yes, really!). I graduated from this in mid-October 2012, having completed the coursework in Paris and in the Champagne town of Reims (someone's gotta do the hard yards, don't they?) in October 2011 and the thesis in June 2012. The thesis is called Bonzer Tucker, Mate and explores the gastronomic memories and highlights of WWOOFers who were hosted by us over the past 10 years.

This Pozible crowd-sourcing campaign presents an opportunity for you to be involved and participate in this little dream to bring world recipes with a nostalgic home-style feel together in an inspiring book. I need your support to back the first printing of the books. The hours and hours of planning and writing are a labor of love, and much of the proof reading will be done by my friends for nothing more than a glass of good, clean and fair wine (oranje tractor, of course!).

Big or small, all of the support and sharing you offer is greatly appreciated and will help us get this book of worldly, delicious recipes into your kitchen, take you away to foreign lands, and fill your belly with love.

How you can help: Pick a great reward from as low as $10 which buys you a warm fuzzy feeling, to thousands if you have happened to win lotto! The Challenges

Time and $ are always obstacles. As far as time goes, I'll be setting mini-deadlines on a weekly basis to keep on top of the work. As far as money goes, I'll be seeking supporting sponsorship to ensure the project is adequately funded. Some of the photos are already available, as you can see below.

I've even produced a mockup book using an online DIY publishing/printing service ....just to see what it might possibly look like!

You'll enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that you've contributed to the realisation of a dream. We'll list your name as a supporter if you like.
