Bike lights for Canberra
Bicycles and cars are both transport, but only cars are sold in Australia with lights as standard. They're optional extras on a bicycle, which is a policy failure. We want to counter this failure with a bulk order of rechargable bike lights, and distribute them to people who can't afford them. If we can raise $170, we can get 10 sets; if we raise $340, we can buy 20 sets. The remaining $10 should cover Pozible's costs.
This project was inspired by the good people at Bike Lane Uprising Chicago, who also decided to defend themselves because their city officials, like ours in Canberra, refuse to provide separated infrastructure including lighting, to keep safe people on bikes.
These are roughly $17 each from this Ebay vendor, but drop to $15.11 if I buy seven or more.
We'll call for volunteers to distribute them, and we'll outline details should we reach our target. But initially we will hand them out at the ANU, University of Canberra, and the CIT campuses of Reid and Bruce. (We'll of course expand our reach if we surpass our goals.
This project is organised by Canberra by Bike Design Company, which was created by Paris Lord in late 2021 to try encouraging ordinary people onto cycles for short trips under 10km. Get in touch via [email protected] or find us on social media @canberrabybike.
Budget Overview
One set of lights costs roughly $17 each from this Ebay vendor, but are $15.11 if I buy seven or more.
If we raise $170, that's enough for 10 sets.
If we double that to $340, we can get 20 sets.
We'll need volunteers to hand them out to people at Canberra Institute of Technology campuses, university campuses, and other places where many people ride.
