SHOP SHOP Fundraiser
SHOP SHOP
Drawing upon a shared interest in playfully toying with a sincere versus ironic engagement with popular culture, SHOP SHOP by Melbourne-based artists Juliet Rowe and Christopher Sciuto will take the form of an exaggeratedly tasteless market place, replete with both hand-made and customised manufactured items such as t-shirts, temporary tattoos, baseball caps, key chains, pencils, towels, friendship bracelets, mugs, stickers and tote bags. In most cases, these ‘goods’ will re-appropriate texts, images and materials used by the artists' in earlier art works.
SHOP SHOP is part of the group exhibition No Reasonable Offer Refused, to be presented at West Space, Melbourne, between 21 September - 13 October 2012.
No Reasonable Offer Refused brings together object-based and performance projects that explore if, and how, it is possible to reshape acts of commerce and exchange. This involves gestures that do not exclude the artist from the activities of the market, but instead actively use this system as a medium that can be negotiated. Curated by Liang Luscombe and Patrice Sharkey, the exhibition features work by Kelly Doley, George Egerton-Warburton, Agatha Gothe-Snape, and Juliet Rowe and Christopher Sciuto
In this
context, Shop Shop is presented as an alternative, symbolic
economic intervention that addresses ideas relating to contemporary consumer
behaviour, the capriciousness of trends, celebrity culture and the cult of the artists, as well as issues of waste and value relating to
disposable products.
FUNDING
The money will go towards a percentage of the exhibition space hire, catalogue printing, and costs related to the raw materials and manufacturing of items for the SHOP SHOP stall. We would be extremely grateful if you could help us realise this project!
