Paul Pax Andrews –

My story is threefold; an awakening then the gift of acceptance,
followed by the journey of mindfulness, for my life has been blessed
with wonderful songs and endless rhythms.

I originally wrote this book as a collection of essays in 2011, it was only available as an e-book online and was not marketed very well, so didn't reach many people. It is an intimate collection of stories covering several topics including heroin addiction and my recovery, the history of jazz in Sydney in the 1970's, jazz education, Buddhism, life on the road as a musician, opal mining and my work helping people struggling with their own demons and challenges.  The book has been amended to bring it up to date for 2017 – this year has presented its own unique challenges!

With your support I will hopefully be able to print and distribute 150 signed Limited Edition copies of Without a Song. The next step will be to find a publisher who can handle the international marketing and distribution for the book, and the success of this campaign will go a long way to achieving that goal.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK

In 2013 essays from Without a Song were awarded Third Prize in a National Jazz Writing

Competition produced by Miriam Zolin and Extempore Magazine.

MORE ABOUT PAX AND THE BOOK

Masonik in Athens, 2014

I arrived in Sydney as a student in 1971 and the book tells you the inside story of what was happening around the Jazz scene at that time and the people responsible for some great music –  like Howie Smith, Roger Frampton, Alan Turnbull, Keith Sterling, John Poche, Bernie McGann, Joe Lane, Judy Bailey and many others, the bands and the Jazz clubs. The Who's Who of Jazz in Sydney.

I will tell you about my Heroin addiction and how I overcame it, how I discovered Buddhism and how I have stayed clean for the last 17 years.

In the 90's I went out into the desert to teach indigenous kids and then on my return created Music Camps and Jazzcamps. I will tell you about some of my great students and other teaching stories.

Lightning Ridge NSW, 1992

Jazzcamp Perth, 2003

Other stories about the Australian Saxophone Quartet, Dizzy and Monterey and Opal mining and touring the Middle East and the USA.

Australian Saxophone Quartet 1977

With Dizzy Giilespie at the Monterey Jazz Festival 1979

In addition I have created a Discography listing hundreds of important Jazz recordings from the 70's. There are also numerous Joe Lane stories, which I hope you will find hilarious and informative.
