For nearly 30 years I’ve been working in WA as a visual artist of recognised excellence and boundless creative energy in public and community art. I'm needing to do some hefty fundraising and decided a Pozible campaign was the way to go.

Mostly the art I make is big. Really big. My artworks have been created for corporations, government departments, schools and arts organisations. My work has all been out in the public realm and there has been little opportunity for friends or collectors to purchase a Paula since almost last century! This project is different. It is small and intimate and personal and the works are something that people like you and me can own and love.

I’ve created a series of prints that I love and I hope you will too. To create these designs I have looked towards my most recent projects. My lacefence and laser cut metal screening are filled with beautiful design-work of WA wildflowers. The Mulla Mulla, Sturt Desert Pea, Bottlebrush, Banksia and Grevillea. Since much of my public art involves collaboration with young people, there are also collaborative works with drawings by my beautiful daughter Ava.

I have a variety of individual prints or collector’s sets for you to peruse and enjoy. I hope you will take part and purchase a little bit of Paula for your own home!

Artwork #1. CALAVERAS
I was wearing my colourful Calaveras print frocks long before hipsters hijacked the Dia de Muertos sugarskull imagery. To honor this tradition I have created my take on the Day of the Dead sugarskull, with a Western Australian wildflower twist, combining Wattyl, Banksia, Mulla Mulla, Kangaroo Paw, Bottle Brush and Grevillea into the celebrated decorative skull.

Artwork #2. Georgiana
This girl with the gorgeous garland of WA wildflowers started off a bit Frida-esque, but I prefer to think she’s WA pioneer Georgiana Molloy. Georgiana was a young woman from a privileged English background who settled in Western Australia in 1830 and is remembered as one of the first botanical collectors in the colony. She gathered an extensive range of native seeds and plants, which together with detailed botanical descriptions she forwarded to collectors in London – Many then successfully grown in various botanical gardens in England or kept as reference in the Kew Herbarium. Her writing, surprisingly personal and even sensual given the social protocols of the time, compared her Australian surroundings to the garden of Eden before Eve was expelled from paradise.

Artwork #3. BALLET GAL
This collection is very special to me. The works created collaboratively with my awesome daughter are bright, energetic and full of love, just like us. The funds we raise from the sale of these works will help us in our future growth as a family and help us keep up our fun, laughter filled creative lives. The flowers featured here are Banksia and Bottle Brush.

Artwork #4. AVA GAL
Ava has a wonderfully ingenuous drawing style that’s rather unique for her age. She has been training in classical ballet for 8 years and so it seemed particularly apt to combine her delightful ballet dancers with my wildflowers. The works will fill your walls with creativity, and be a special piece of us in your lives….
Amongst the Banksia, Wattyl, Mulla Mulla, Kangaroo Paw and Bottle Brush are the Grevillea. The Grevilleas are a beautiful wildflower. The variability between species is incredible but characteristic to the Proteaceae family - the namesake of the family, the god Proteus was noted for his ability to change his appearance and form at will. Among the 270 or more species, almost entirely from Australia, the habitat can be that of a large forest tree or a diminutive crevice plant.

Artwork #5. BOUQUET
I particularly like the retro 60s feeling of this simple bouquet of assorted Banksia. These abstracted illustrations were developed from close examination of Banksia Coccinea, Hookers Banksia and Bird's Nest Banksia. Banksia are a well known genus of Australian wildflower with around 170 species in the plant family Proteaceae. The character most commonly associated with Banksia is the flower spike, with a woody axis covered in tightly-packed hair-like flowers. For something so dry and hostile looking, Banksias are actually heavy producers of nectar, making them an important source of food for nectivorous animals, including honeyeaters and small mammals like honey possums, pygmy possums, gliders and bats.

SO YOU WANT TO BUY LOTS OF ODD COMBINATIONS?   Pozible is a great platform for this sort of short term fundraising. However it can’t accommodate multiple choices within a single transaction. If you’d like a different combination or multiple purchases the simplest way is that you will need to do multiple transactions or alternatively, contact me and I can set up your own unique combo.

NEW TARGET $8000!!

DON'T STOP HERE! With the "all or nothing" nature of Pozible I set the original target really low in order to ensure the project went ahead. The target was $4,000, but in reality I need to raise an amount double, triple or five times that original target! So YAY all you philanthropists and Patrons of the Arts who have already purchased, and new visitors grab an opportunity to purchase some of my work while providing some much appreciated support during a difficult time. It's a win win situation! Read on....

How The Funds Will Be Used

WHY BUY?
I graduated from WAIT with a Fine Arts Degree in Textiles in 1985. Since then I’ve carved out a career as a visual artist starting with our screen printing business Haughty Culture, moving into community art, work with festivals, an ever growing focus on arts education and the bigger public art.

As Kurt Vonnegut said “The arts are not a way to make a living….”, but I skipped Kurt’s advice and throughout I have supported myself financially solely on my arts practice, which I guess is a rare thing.

I am the sole supporter of my daughter Ava.

I have recently had a significant loss, which is impacting on the future financial security for myself and my daughter. I need to get creative with some immediate fundraising and I need to call on support from far and wide to face this challenge. I’ve set a low goal of just $4,000, but in reality that needs to be closer to $40,000! The funds I raise from the sale of these works will help Ava and me to safely jump this economic hurdle we’ve been presented with.

My mother and my mother’s legacy is an integral part of this story. This photo was taken in Durban, South Africa, in her world before Ava and before me and with all her hopes and dreams set out before her. Her contribution to our family was immeasurable and I have felt her loss every day. She would have so loved being Ava's grandma. Just as I’ve enjoyed combining my images with my daughter’s, I have loved combining this image of my mother with my images.
