Greetings from Amanda and Kelsie and all our friends at the Pixie Collective!
We are two Melbourne clothing designers and our wonderful extended family of Australian artists and contributors
We met back in 2009, and as two struggling artists trying to make a living from our creations, we struck up a conversation about the challenges of getting the value we deserved for our work. In response to the competitive and profit-driven retail marketplace we saw around us, we decided to create a cooperative space that allows small-scale designers to enter the retail environment, without the pressures of high commission rates and competition from mass-manufactured lines.
Since 2010 The Pixie Collective has been bringing heart and innovation to the fashion strip of Northcote, Melbourne. Showcasing the handmade creations of Australian artisans, craftspeople and designers, the Pixie Collective operates under the core ethos of providing affordable retail space to local micro-businesses, ensuring that the profits are returned to the artists as much as possible. The Pixie Collective began selling exclusively Australian, handmade fashion and accessories, opening with the work of 40 local artists. We’ve since grown to represent over 100 artists, now including Australian designers with lines we know are made ethically overseas.
But with all our new friends our Northcote home is becoming crowded. From such humble beginnings we have since been overwhelmed with the number of deserving artists who are in need of a fair and balanced retail space. At the heart of the Pixie Collective is the opportunity to showcase the work of our contributors as artworks rather than a commodity, to tell the story of the piece and the designer, and to return the full value to the creator as much as possible. With clothing racks full to bursting, and more and more artists in need of support, we really need a more suitable space. With the recent sale of our current building we’ve decided now is the time to seek out our new home.
Why We Need Your Help
As a private business working on cooperative ethics, we cannot rely on the banks to support us in funding the move to new premises. While business income is building steadily, the majority of profits go to the artists whose work is sold – that’s the whole point! The true value and social capital generated by the Pixie Collective simply doesn’t show up on the banks calculators. As a business founded on the principles of collaboration and cooperation, of the greater community supporting the expression of the artistic community, we thought we’d turn to our customers and supporters to help us make the big move - without having to compromise our values.
We are asking for contributions to help cover some of the start up costs of advanced rent, bond, marketing and shop fitting that come with moving to a new shop. The Pixie Collective store has proved that with a little bit of support from many people, great things can happen! We want you to be a part of maintaining this unique space for the creative growth of independent Australian artists. Our artists and collaborators have gotten together to donate a fantastic range of their work as rewards to help us show our appreciate for your support
Budget:
We are currently looking at two buildings on High Street in the Northcote/Thornbury area, as well as keeping an eye out for other options while negotiating on these two building. Our exact costs will depend on the building we decide upon but here is an estimated budget.
· Up front rent $3000, we hope to negotiate a month free rent but we’ll need this upfront payment to secure the lease
· Bond $6000, as we have to pay bond when signing the lease we may be paying this up to 3 months before receiving a bond return on our current shop.
· Shop front signage, approximately $1800. The beautiful artwork on our current shop has become our customer’s visual reference to finding us. We feel it is important to have something similar recreated on the front of our new building
· Marketing $1000: this is really important, we need to ensure that all our current customers know of our move and also attract new customers to the new store to get off to a good start. This includes things such as flyers, stickers, e-banners and other electronic marketing, posters and whatever else we can squeeze out of this budget.
· Shop Fitting $3200: We’ll be taking all our current fittings with us and most of the labour for fitting the new shop will be very kindly donated by our handy men. However moving to a new space will require purchasing more fitting as well as large expenses in preparing the new building such as painting, lighting, flooring. We expect this not to cover the total cost involved in fitting the new shop but it’ll be a really good start.
This total of $15,000 we are hoping to raise is really what we expect to be the bare minimum costs incurred in moving. If we generate more than our target for funding there are so many things we can do with any extra money; such as increasing our marketing budget, creating even better displays and signage for each artist and down the track purchasing some complimentary stock lines at wholesale to help strengthen our profits and ensure our future continuation.
Our Journey
These last few years have been quite a journey for us. In the beginning we threw in literally every cent we both had to open the Northcote store. We stood tall in the face of those that said we were crazy, that without 100% mark up on goods we didn’t have a good business model. We stayed calm while some around us cried loudly about ‘economic downturn’ and ‘this is not the time to engage in retail’, and we smiled with gratitude and warmth in our hearts for the beautiful people who understood what we were trying to do and helped in any way they could.
We
grappled with our fears during our first winter when we were nearly overcome
with debt due to poor sales. We sort advice from anyone who would give it, we
learnt and grew and allowed the business to evolve in the ways it needed to,
while maintaining our core beliefs. We laughed and cried and worked on
ourselves, overcoming many personal obstacles with the knowledge that the
stronger and more aware we were as people, the stronger our business would be
and the better we could be at helping others. And slowly, slowly we have grown.
In late 2011 we celebrated sending our first cheque to the tax department – yes celebrated, because it meant there was profit, not loss. In October 2012 we celebrated our 2nd anniversary by beginning to pay ourselves our first humble monthly wages! And now we celebrate every month, as our profits regularly exceed our expenses, giving us space to breath, space to grow and a bright future.
One of the biggest things we have learnt on this journey is that The Pixie Collective must become profitable in and of itself. From this strong and stable place it has the ability to help others much more effectively than from a place where it has no profit and no room to grow. We endeavor to continue to help as many small businesses grow with us while concurrently allowing The Pixie Collective as an entity to grow to a further level of financial stability – that way we won’t have to write this letter ever again
Without even pressing the ‘launch now’ button on this funding project we are already filled with gratitude for the love and support we have received over the past few years. We thank those that have given their time, love, smiles, energy, labour, wages and anything else in the past and in the future. Thankyou for making our wild dreams possible!!!
