ROUGH TRADE

Welcome to Rough Trade! The show where savagery, the commodified body, and identity intertwine, in the glorious name of Reality Entertainment. Four sadistically sexy individuals are pitted against each other in a sordid spectacle designed especially for your viewing pleasure. Don’t be fooled by their pretty, painted faces: these kitties have claws.

Duration: 55 Minutes

who the heck are we?

The Violent Romantics are a group of soon to be industry professionals who specialize in Theatre, Photography, Film and Digital Media. Based in Brisbane, QLD, Australia, TVR are second and third year students (6 people) from the Advanced Diploma of Arts Acting, Southbank Institute of Technology and two (2) students from the Griffith University, Queensland College of Art.

what is 'rough trade'?

Rough Trade is a contemporary installation piece that combines theatre and digital media.

Centered in an underground fight club, Rough Trade is presided upon by a ruthless ringleader.  Madam X manipulates and exploits her subjects' and plays on their weaknesses, to create an action-packed show for they're online audience.

The Players:

Madam X  -  the ringleader
Stud  -  she's a bad mama jama
Tarry  -  she likes her cake with cream
Viktor  -   likes to give his kiss with a fist
Dee  -  the fresh meat
and
Tubs  -  the all seeing eye.

It combines the use of stylized hyper-violence and dance, loud music, strobe lights, sweet tunes, and general smut. It also contains an awesome projection screen (and possibly a smoke machine) that exhibits fundamental add breaks.

Inspired by the likes of Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Quentin Tarantino, and French New Wave Cinema. We enjoy a cocktail of dangerous encounters, law breaking, and seeking the unspeakable, on ice, of course.

why we need your help?

The Violent Romantics made their debut performance at the 2011 Fast Festival, performing “Rough Trade”.

“The show where no matter what you look like, who you are, your age, gender OR who/what you love, you’re guaranteed one thing. A merciless thrashing.”
- Danielle Muir - Film, Food, and the Everyday

Following this, The Violent Romantics have been invited to perform Rough Trade at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

This is an absolute dream!

Rough Trade has been created in it's entirety, by students. By performing at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival, this opportunity allows us to present our work, not only to the public, but to local and international industry professionals. It will take our study and practice out of the classroom and onto the field.

We need your help to get us there and make this dream a reality.

the goals and the outcomes

The Violent Romantics were surprised and honored to be asked to perform at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival. It is this opportunity that students, such as us, strive for. Therefore, not only do we want to do it, but make the most of it as well.

The ultimate goal is to perform at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
To this, there are a number of outcomes. Industry practice, national and international exposure, connections within the industry, possibility of the show to picked up, and lastly, a chance for our minds to learn and practice the many things that may stumble along during this period.

The other major goal is to break into the industry and present to the world, something different

talking about the dollar

All money donated will go to getting us to Adelaide and getting the show off the ground. This includes: Production Costs, Venue Hire, Technical Hire (including staff) and Insurance.

If the goal of $1500 is exceeded, donations will go towards taking the show on tour. That's right! We'll jump in a mini van and come to you.

why should you get involved?

Because..
"Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable."
- George Bernard Shaw

Not only that, you will know that you are supporting students (who thank you very much). Every donation will get a mention on our Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter pages. There are also some awesome incentives to get you to help get us there. Annnnnd good karma.
