What is SUPERTONE?

Video Clip, Pornography, Yellow Brick Road and Dorothy: a collision of these hyper-real synthetic fantasies.

SUPERTONE is a new dance work choreographed by Rennie McDougall, a performance of re-sensitisation as images are appropriated from the silver screen into the immediate performance space.

Working from a visually rich cornucopia of celluloid images, from The Wizard of Oz to fashion photographer David LaChapelle, five dancers reclaim the theatre by manifesting these imagined Technicolor worlds into the physical space. A saturation of colour and sound drench the otherwise-static space to create a visually hypnotic performance experience. The audience, usually on the periphery of experience, are left only with the performers to share in an energetic exchange, to reawaken a more visceral presence and to question their roles as observers.

SUPERTONEbrings together some of the most exciting young artists currently practicing in Melbourne, fore mostly the five performers - Paula Lay, Rennie McDougall, Lily Paskas, Lilian Steiner and James Shannon – all of whom are highly sought after performers by the top choreographers in the country. SUPERTONE marks Rennie McDougall’s first full-length choreographic project and has been two years in the making. Other creative collaborators include: composer Simon Charles, who recently composed for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; lighting designer Rose Connors Dance, and costume designer Rebecca Jensen.
