Tooth and Sinew, a newly-formed independent theatre company, are presenting their maiden production of Howard Barker's "Scenes from an Execution" at the Old Fitzroy Theatre in Woolloomooloo.
The play is concerned with themes of propaganda, censorship, the justice of war and the freedom of the artist. It revolves around the central figure of Galactia, a Venetian artist and furious pacifist. Commissioned to paint a one hundred foot celebration of the historic Battle of Lepanto (a naval battle that killed 40 000 men in four hours), she plans to present instead a graphic and horrific depiction of the cruelty and ugliness of war. Ignoring the interference of the State, the pleas of family, the threats of the artistic elite and the resentment of her lover, she single-mindedly pursues her own truth. But you must always pay a price for courage.
"Scenes from an Execution" is a truly brilliant, critically acclaimed contemporary classic, written by a writer criminally underperformed in this country.
To top it off, a brilliant cast and design team have been assembled. Actors with decades of experience and a wealth of talent, and some of the most exciting and in demand designers in Sydney. This show is going to be very good. And with your generosity and support, it may very well be brilliant.

How The Funds Will Be Used
We are pouring every cent we have into this production. Your donation would assist in getting us to the very high standard that we have set ourselves. A basic breakdown would be:
- $1000 into the costume budget. The play is set in 1571 and our designer, Christie, has created some beautiful images to deck these characters in. So pieces need to be hired. Pieces need to be made. Pieces need to be dyed. Pieces need to be perfected.
- $1000 into the set budget. Our designer Andrea is busy creating what will be one of the most striking, changeable and beautiful sets seen in the independent theatre of Sydney this year. Materials need to be hired and materials need to be rigged.
- $500 for lighting and sound. Ben and Nate need top range equipment for what they want to do.
- $500 for final rehearsal costs. Rehearsal space costs are rarely considered when people think of theatre. This would cover our final fortnight.
- $1000 for the ARTISTS. These actors and designers are giving everything they have to this piece. If we could, they'd be making their fortunes from it. Help us bump up the financial reward for their efforts.

The Challenges
Independent theatre is essentially one enormous challenge. A worthwhile challenge, but a challenge nonetheless. There's is a mountain of work for often very little financial restitution. It's lucky then that we're not in it for the money. We're in it because we are passionate about creating and sharing stories with both friends and strangers alike and because nothing compares to the experience of creating the moments of incredible power and intangibility that you can only get in the theatre.
You need money to do that though. So that's the major challenge. Essentially.
