Interview with a Bluesman

This is a story of an aging blues guitarist. He's had his day in the sun and now lives in an old shed on an isolated property. He's comfortable and has come to terms with his lot in life. A news crew has arranged to meet with him and do a story on him.
I wrote this script 2 1/2 years ago and for various reasons I have held off producing it. Now it's time!!
It's a story I feel is an important one to tell, besides my love of Blues, and Pub rock, I often wonder what happened to many of the true musicans from my days of going to pub gigs where you would smoke a pack of "Winnie Reds", your shoes(or thongs) stick to the carpet and you wear more beer then you drink! What happens when their gigs get smaller and fewer?
Of many of the scripts I have written, this is one that I have passionately wanted to tell and want to get right. it was a labour of love to develop the story from concept to characters to storyline. It draws on many years of hanging out in pubs watching and listening to bands in the late 70's to mid 80's. The audio was always too loud yet we insisted on standing in the direct line of fire. Ears would ring for a few days after a Cold Chisel gig. The Angels, The Church, Sunny Boys, Dragon, Rose Tattoo were no different. In the late 80's early 90's when my tolerence for sticky carpets and too loud audio weakened I searched for tamer music and musicans. Brownie McGee, Sonny Terry, Dutch Tilders, all great bluesmen. What happened to them, where are they now?
Cast - Robert Bundle and Christina Bush
Musician /Actor
Robert will bring an amazing look and feel to the film. His guitar work and on-screen presence as Billy will certainly bring an audience into the film to feel for his life as he talks about his music and his memories of playing with some outstanding players back in the day.

Christina Bush
Actor / Stunt person in training
Christina has worked on a number of films, this role will be a step further for her as Sasha, a reporter hoping to get a good story. Sasha is a city girl and is a bit awkward out in the country. Wearing Jimmy Choo's in a cow paddock sums it up! She has a strong on-screen presence as she tries to draw the story out of a reclusive Billy.

A Stellar Crew

The stellar crew;- Richard, Pete, Josie and Scot have a proven track record of working together on projects since 2010. Individually they have forged strong careers in film as writers and directors and other professional roles in the industry. They come together again to tell this story;
Writer/Director/Producer

Director of Photography
Pete Butz

Assistant Director
Josie Baynes

Interview with a Bluesman - My vision

'Interview' is the story of Billy the last remaining member of a legendary blues band "Billy Kerb and the Pavement Sliders" who worked hard for 20 years to scratch a living from playing in pubs and sought fame and the ever elusive fortune. He sometimes worked alone or in the band travelling across the country one gig after another. Failed marriages and a distant estranged daughter are his only regrets in life.
We find Billy having come to terms with his life, comfortable living back in the bush. He lives quietly these days with his guitar for company. Keeping warm in winter is probably his only worry.
Sasha, a reporter from the local station KMCS News TV arrives one day to interview him. A city girl, she struggles with the concept and layout of an uneven and rocky ground, high heels and a tight skirt do not bode well for a day on a basic rough country property. Her crew follow her, their are clinical and set up quickly wanting to get the story and move on. The soundie is a fan and has an old poster in the van and he wants Billy to sign it.
In true blues tradition I want to tell the story of Billy through Billy as he starts to lay his story bare for Sasha. As he tells his story Billy plays his guitar with heavy slide work, as did many blues players as they told their story of love and loss and heart ache to an audience. I want to record the guitar work live on set so it is raw and not over produced back in a studio. wrong notes and all!
As the story unfolds and builds the primary camera will merge into the news camera to tell the final part of the story. This will give it an almost candid camera feel as the news crew go about their business during a break, Billy plays guitar, all unaware the camera is still rolling.
How The Funds Will Be Used

Your support will help us in many different areas such as;
- Location costs (hiring of locations, agreements, safety control)
- Transport (airfares) and accommodation costs for cast and crew
- The hire of lighting and sound equipment
- The hire of professional technicians
- Post-production and design including sound and colour-grade
- Catering for the cast and crew
- And much, much more!

We have also linked up with ACT Education to provide access to the set for a number of Indigenous kids studying media and production at college level. They will visit the set and work alongside our crew and get valuable hands on experience - a great opportunity that doesn't often come along too often. We hope they can be inspired.
Below is a breakdown of how we will use these funds.
Cast and Crew fees: $2500 - $3000
Camera & Lighting: $1,000
Sound: $900
Post Production and sound design: $3,500
Costume / Make Up: $200
Catering: $500
Marketing and rewards: $1000
The Challenges

We have many things in place already including an outstanding cast ( Robert Bundle and Christina Bush) and a crew who believe wholeheartedly in the project. I have always, as much and where possible, tried to compensate cast and the crew who have worked tirelessly with me over several years.
We need to fly our lead to Canberra. Robert is a professional musician and actor and this is his craft which he has learnt and moulded over many years and his source of employment. Christina is an aspiring actor and stunt person learning, moulding and honing her craft.
Our crew is full of professionals. Our cinematographer Pete Butz, has worked on many many films both here and overseas. Assistant Director Josie Baynes is an award winning writer and director with her own films and DigitalHed Media's Scot McCann is our post production guru.
As a business, Wirrim Films ( and Plump Angel Productions) have always aimed to compensate those who work with us, when and where it's possible. We don't want to just 'feed and water our cast and crew' and ask them to sacrifice their weekends and nights, we want to build a professional environment and business model to make sure the people who work so hard to bring a story and vision alive and to the screen are compensated for their talent and effort. Your help will assist with this goal.
