Mandurah's youth tell it like it is

Help Mandurah's young people debut their new show MY.SELFIE at the PERTH FRINGE WORLD FESTIVAL 2015. It's innovative, energetic, powerful and uniquely told though authentic local young voices!
Rocked by a series of recent violent incidents in Mandurah, Riptide’s young members felt it imperative to lend voice to their community, express their concerns and offer a united front as they stand up for the City that they adore. The group applied to the Australia Council for the Arts for funding to support the development of My.Selfie and was successful in their proposal to create a new locally driven performance work with mentorship from an outstanding team of emerging, mid career and established artists. The team includes local artists Rebecca Boddy and Scarlett Yakovina with mentorship from writer Suzie Miller (onefivezeroseven, Driving Into Walls; Perth International Arts Festival), director Sarah Giles (Mrs Warren’s Profession 2013; Perplex, Sydney Theatre Company 2014), and choreographer/producer Helen Duncan (Three’s Company Two’s a Party; Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival, Perth Fringe).
"Every single individual involved has put so much of themselves in this show. It’s incredibly personal and not just another piece of teen angst. We’ve taken stock of reality and how we feel about it and created an amazing performance that, we feel, needs to be shared with everyone". Madison Royal, 17years.
The work takes the audience on a journey through the highs and lows of living in Mandurah, told through the eyes of its young community. Mandurah’s young people tell it like it is and don’t hold back!
Before we hit FRINGE WORLD we have some very important work to do before launching ourselves into this quality festival program and we NEED YOUR HELP!
Here's what's on our to do list:
Revisit the work since we did our last showing in April 2014
Re-work and rehearse things that we feel could do with a little improvement
Lengthen the work (The audience were left wanting SO much more than our final 30min showing!)
Hook up with a very cool sound and lighting designer to help us get the work looking really slick
Promote My.Selfie all over the place to make sure we get massive audiences
And finally...step on stage...and SHINE!
'Please get behind this amazing team of young people. They have demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment and contributed their talents along with emotional honesty and integrity at every stage of the works development. Mandurah should feel very proud of their local young representatives; they have produced a thought provoking and engaging work delivered with surprising technical skills beyond there years' (Guy Boyce, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre)

'Riptide is such a great opportunity for young actors and dancers, I have tried so many things that would never even have crossed my mind to do before'. Lexie Sleet, 15years
'Riptide provides a safe environment where I can be myself and come in contact with other peers who share similar interests as well as learning from professionals who have plenty of experience in their field' Scott Galbraith, 19 years (From his early days in Riptide, Scott now trains at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and has just performed with Step Youth Dance Company for a season at the Heath Ledger Theatre. We couldn't be prouder!)
All of the Riptide members feel that they have been given an invaluable insight into learning about creative processes, working with renowned directors, script writers and choreographers and value the opportunity to continue to learn from their outstanding team of artist.
Choreographer and producer Helen Duncan shares her thoughts on the project, ‘I think we were all really eager to get on board for this project because the work has just such an honest voice from Mandurah’s young people. The group has something to say and they are not afraid to tell Mandurah’s young and old exactly what’s on their mind. It makes for a very honest, fresh and energetic piece of workand I am extremely proud to be involved.
