CROWBAR The Etching Press

AU$2,890
of $2,632 targetyrs ago
Successful on 21st Nov 2016 at 8:30AM.

This fundraiser is for a small geared etching press (the Merlarue MX458-pictured) and delivery costs. Please help me achieve this and complete my little home studio.

Last year I graduated from the University of Tasmania’s College of the Arts in Hobart with a Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking. Much of my post graduate research looked into the relationship between ground/physical land and imagined landscape. I live very remotely. My transport options now are limited. Due to life’s circumstances I find myself unable to get to an open access print studio. However I am situated in the perfect place for an artist retreat. Since 2008 the view from my desk, and the wild forest that surrounds my home, has been a recurrent theme in my visual art and my academic research.

During my student years I collected many of the small tools and resources required for my craft. I have an etching bath and a customised steel hotplate. I have many plates for adding layers to my compositions and I have a dozen new etched plates made but as yet unproofed. (I long to see these finish works.) What is missing is access to an etching press. The press pictured is large enough to take a half sheet of my favourite cotton rag etching paper. As I have been developing small works for some time, it is a size that will suit many of my existing etching plates .  I already have a kind offer to manufacture it a stand on wheels, so it will be versatile in the home studio and can be moved readily in the future if it is needed for small classes or a residency. This campaign will put me in the position where I can once again produce some new work and feel productive again.

I will be reaching into my map drawers to offer as fundraising incentive many prints, including work for mini print shows and my Honours and Masters works. Many of the exhibited works are in fine condition but may have pin holes in the margin corners marking where they have been exhibited but these could be easily covered by matt board by the framers (I will make note of this where possible.)  Most of the works only exist as a single state work, or a limited number of artist’s proofs. For those looking for a rare print, many of these works will never see editioning.

The small print for those who kindly donate:

For those who relish a sad back story, like a lot of other remote artist types, I spend too much of my time battling depression and anxiety. I didn’t want to take this tack framing my fundraising but not being able to engage with the art form I have spent many years working toward works badly upon my depressive nature whereas having access to an etching press will offer a good deal toward my occupational health. If this reason for pledging means something to you then thank you very much for your kind understanding. If you wanted to see my artist side productive again because you like ART (Yay!), then thank you too for your pledge. If you just like my printmaking enough to pledge for a small etching, then thank you too and I hope you will find long term enjoyment in it.

As Pozible gives me only limited pictorial space please visit me at my Facebook Artist page to view a larger selection of the prints on offer.

Addendum

During a recent chat with my Pozible representative I was asked if I would make statement about what I will endeavour to achieve with any funding excesses.  I hadn’t considered going ’over the line’ at all in my initial proposal, as my sights were only set on my crowd funding purpose. In conversation with Pozible we thought it appropriate if any excess eventuate it will go toward my upcoming exhibition costs. The *runs with scissors 2* group show will be the first outing for my work since graduation.

How The Funds Will Be Used

This fundraising covers the price of the press and its delivery and a smaller amount to cover Pozible's fees. The budget is as follows:-

Press  $3500

Freight of press $260

Pozible’s 5% $188 (approximation)

Fundraising total $2632

Crowbar total $1316

Total $3948

The Challenges

The campaign is with the assistance of Crowbar, a partnership between Arts Tasmania and Pozible. In short if I raise this $2632, Crowbar will provide a top up of $1316, thus making the project viable. If this fundraiser fails to meet its mark, I will receive nothing.

With thanks

I understand if your life is full of art and you don’t need more art in your life. For $10 I will send you a very hearty thank you email with an attached photo of me pulling the first print from my new press.
