In 2010 I was lucky enough to study in Austin Texas for the final semester of my Masters program at Melbourne University. During my 6 months in America I chronicled my adventures through a humorous series of written journals titled ‘Postcards From Texas’. The written work depicted the places I spent time in, including Los Angeles, Texas, Mexico, New York and San Francisco, and gave insight into the friendships and encounters shared and formed with American folk.
A missing element in my written journals was the photographic image. Although I was shooting continuously, still and moving imagery, the photographic evidence of my time away has not yet had the opportunity to be seen in any context.
Postcards from Texas (an exhibition set for the May 24th, 2012 at Photoaccess gallery in Manuka ACT) is a collection of photographic images and multimedia work that extends upon the written journals published back in 2010/11.
The photographs of my time in America stand alone as singular narratives, each picture documenting a moment captured by a lone traveler who is experiencing a new world for the first time. This body of work also exists as a fabricated story, a non-linier tale woven together by landscapes, interiors and portraits.
This new collection of work aims to explore and illustrate ideas surrounding relationships; intrapersonal, romantic, social and geographic. I see this body of work as a series of emotional landscapes, encompassing all subject matter. The characters, living areas, monuments, self-portraits and public spaces are each composed with a sensitivity and level of intimacy that has now become intrinsic throughout my photographic practice. I wish for this body of work to act as a bridge between two western cultures, a visual exchange and a shared experience.
