SandS through the hourglass are extremely excited to announce we have been chosen to be part of
Schaubühne's Festival of International New Drama (F.I.N.D.) 2012! Schaubühne, one of Europe's most famous theatre companies, have invited us to create a world premiere that will be performed to an international audience in Berlin throughout the festival in March. We need your help so we can produce the best possible project and strongly represent Australia. We are the FIRST Australian company to be involved in this festival!
The curatorial style of the venue and festival is the latest new dramatic performance to come out of each of the countries selected. It is the Schaubühne’s annual cutting edge festival that has supported and launched the careers of many famous theatre directors and writers such as Marius von Mayenburg, David Gieselmann, Mark Ravenhill, Debbie Tucker Green, Falk Richter, and Benedict Andrews. It has also introduced the works of Sarah Kane, Jon Fosse, Biljana Srbljanovic, Caryl Churchill and Richard Dresser to the German-speaking world.
Not only will this opportunity provide international exposure but will also allow our company to further develop and expand our process under the mentorship of one of Europe's leading Theatre Directors, Thomas Ostermeier. We will be collaborating with prominent Eurpoean artists and designers on the project, allowing us to refine and heighten our artistic standards working at an international level.
Please help us take our first step towards achieving our greater dream of creating and performing site specific work around the world.
THE PROJECT
The One-Eyed Man is King
World PremiereTo have control is to have choice. To have choice is to have freedom. To be free is...
There is a darkness growing inside, a desire that refuses to cease.
When the world seems against you, when you are a nameless face in the crowd, when you have no special gift to set you apart from the rest, it only takes one person to change you forever.
Peer into the dislocated realm of two lost souls searching for a greater meaning. An exploration of inner desires for knowledge, influence, control, and the ultimate grab for power.
To realise this show in the striking visual aesthetic that is SandS through the hourglass we need access to many and varied materials. Your pledges will allow us this access. It will provide us with means to create and build incredible sets, costumes, sound and lighting whilst in Berlin. All pledges are strictly to be used toward the necessary materials to make this happen. Essentially, you are building this show with us!
WHO ARE SandS?
SandS through the hourglass are an award winning Australian performance group who explore the beauty and horror of human behaviour using image based storytelling. Mixing Theatre of Cruelty and Poor Theatre ideologies with the raw confrontation of performance art, we perform structured improvisations set as poetic vignettes that form a narrative. Within elaborate installations text-free action plays out to a charged live sound design. This work is a rebellion against naturalism and a celebration of the ‘risk’ that live performance can offer. An experience not easily forgotten. We create a space where there is permission for lines to be crossed.
SandS through the hourglass recently created a one night only pop-up performance event in Melbourne at 1000 Pound Bend, were part of Griffin Theatre Company's Heartbreak Hotel, reimagined our Sydney Fringe award winning show Trapture for a full season at the Old Fitzroy Theatre, and have performed and created installations for Shapiro Gallery, At The Vanishing Point Gallery, Sydney City Council's Art & About and have just finished a 2 year residency in the Cube at Oxford Art Factory.
